Chapter 13 - The Price of TruthBy evening, Judge Keller had no choice.

The emergency removal order was suspended.

Maya and Noah remained with Arthur pending full restoration of parental rights.

Olivia was placed under independent medical protection.

Warren Bellamy was not arrested yet.

Powerful men rarely fall the first time truth touches them.

But the first crack had appeared.

And Warren knew it.

That night, Arthur brought Maya, Noah, and Olivia back to the estate.

The children were quiet in the car.

Too much had happened.

Too many dead people had come back to life.

Too many strangers had become family.

Olivia sat beside them, watching their faces as if blinking might make them vanish.

When the car stopped at the house, Noah hesitated.

Arthur noticed.

“What is it?”

Noah looked at the front door.

“Is she inside?”

Victoria.

Arthur shook his head.

“No.”

“Where is she?”

“At a secure hotel with Evelyn’s people.”

Maya’s expression hardened.

“Good.”

Olivia touched Maya’s hand.

“She hurt you?”

Maya looked away.

Noah answered for her. “She slapped us.”

Olivia closed her eyes.

Arthur said quietly, “She won’t come near you unless you choose it.”

Maya looked at him sharply.

“Why would we choose it?”

Arthur did not answer.

Because some choices could not be forced.

Inside, Mrs. Bell had prepared soup, fresh bread, and four places at the kitchen table instead of the formal dining room.

Olivia stared at the room like it was a painting of a life she had missed.

Maya sat across from her, guarded.

Noah sat beside Arthur.

Nobody knew what to say.

Finally, Noah asked, “Do you like tomato soup?”

Olivia smiled through tears.

“I used to.”

Noah pushed the bread basket toward her.

“This one is soft.”

It was the smallest kindness.

It broke everyone.

Later, after the children slept in the yellow nursery together because neither wanted to be alone, Arthur found Olivia standing in the doorway.

She looked at the painted stars.

“I painted that one crooked,” she whispered.

Arthur stepped beside her.

“I told you it was perfect.”

“You lied.”

“I was in love.”

She looked at him then.

The years stood between them again.

Not dead years.

Stolen years.

“Did you love her?” Olivia asked.

Arthur knew who she meant.

Victoria.

He answered honestly.

“I loved who I thought she was.”

Olivia nodded.

“Did she love you?”

Arthur looked down the hallway.

“I don’t know.”

Olivia’s voice softened.

“She kept them alive.”

Arthur’s jaw tightened.

“She also kept them from me.”

“Both can be true.”

He looked at her.

Olivia’s eyes filled again.

“I don’t forgive her.”

“I didn’t ask you to.”

“But I remember her crying when they took Maya away. She kept saying, ‘She’s just a baby.’”

Arthur closed his eyes.

The world had become too complicated for clean hatred.

Downstairs, Evelyn arrived with news.

“Warren is moving assets offshore. He’s preparing to flee or fight.”

Arthur’s face hardened.

“Then we stop him.”

Evelyn handed him a file.

“There’s more. Ruth’s box had a ledger. Payments to judges, doctors, police, and one name you need to see.”

Arthur opened the file.

The name near the bottom made him go still.

Dr. Samuel Reed.

Arthur’s uncle.

His father’s brother.

The man who had stood beside Arthur at every funeral.

The man who had advised him to marry Victoria.

May you like

Arthur looked up slowly.

Evelyn said, “Warren wasn’t working alone.”
