Chapter 13 - Clara’s SecretClara sat at the kitchen island, both hands wrapped around a mug she had not touched.

Dominic waited.

Not pressing.

That made it harder.

“When my mother and I left my stepfather,” Clara began, “we had nothing. Harbor Light helped us for a few months, but after that, we bounced between rooms, friends, cheap motels.”

Dominic’s face softened.

“I know some of this.”

“Not all.”

She swallowed.

“When I was twenty-one, I worked for a private hostess agency. Not illegal. Not exactly clean either. Rich men hired women to attend dinners, auctions, private parties. We were told to look beautiful, laugh at jokes, and never ask questions.”

Dominic’s jaw tightened.

“One night, I overheard two men discussing payments to city inspectors. Bribes. Unsafe buildings. People could have died.”

“What did you do?”

“I recorded them.”

Dominic’s eyes changed.

Clara continued, “I gave the recording to a journalist. The story broke. Three men were arrested. One developer went bankrupt.”

“Who?”

Clara looked at him.

“Elliot Whitmore. Nolan’s father.”

Silence.

Dominic understood everything at once.

Nolan’s hatred.

The leak.

The trap.

The dress.

“This was revenge,” he said.

Clara nodded.

“I changed my last name back to Bennett after my mother’s divorce. The story never named me publicly. But Nolan found out.”

Dominic’s voice was low. “Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because when we met, everyone already said I married danger. I did not want you to think I came with enemies of my own.”

He knelt in front of her.

“Clara.”

Her eyes filled.

“I was ashamed.”

“Of saving lives?”

“Of who I had to pretend to be to survive.”

Dominic took her hands.

“You survived. That is not shame.”

She broke then.

Not loudly.

Just one quiet sob that seemed to release years.

Dominic held her.

Later, Elise confirmed the threat was real. Someone claimed to have old agency photos, edited to look scandalous. They intended to release them before the inquiry hearing.

Clara listened.

Then she wiped her face.

“Let them.”

May you like

Dominic looked at her.

“No hiding,” Clara said. “Not anymore.”
