Chapter 8 - Clara’s CountermoveDominic arrived in fourteen minutes.

He entered Harbor Light not like a criminal, not like a king, but like a husband who had spent the drive imagining every possible threat to his wife.
Maren Vale stood when she saw him.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Maren said, “You look older.”
Dominic replied, “So do people who survive.”
Her eyes softened.
Clara watched them carefully.
There was history there, but not the kind gossip would enjoy. It was heavier. Built from emergency rooms, statements, and signatures made under fear.
Dominic’s attorney, Elise Monroe, scanned the emails Maren had brought.
“This is bribery,” Elise said. “Potential witness tampering, depending how far Whitmore’s team pushed.”
Clara looked at Dominic. “Can we release it?”
Elise shook her head. “Not yet. If we release too early, they call it fabricated. We need them to deny it first.”
Dominic looked at Clara. “What do you want to do?”
It was the right question.
Not what should I do.
Not let me handle it.
What do you want?
Clara stood straighter.
“Nolan wants to make this about you. So we make it about the women.”
Elise smiled slightly. “That is not just morally stronger. It is legally smarter.”
Maren nodded. “There are others. I can call them.”
Dominic’s jaw tightened. “Only if they choose.”
Clara looked at him.
He met her eyes.
That was the man she knew. Not perfect. Not gentle by nature. But trying, every day, to put choice back where violence had taken it.
By evening, five women had agreed to speak privately with Elise.
By midnight, Clara had drafted a statement.
Not Dominic.
Clara.
The next morning, she stood outside Harbor Light with Maren and three other survivors beside her.
Cameras flashed.
Clara stepped to the microphone.
“Yesterday, Nolan Whitmore asked Chicago to investigate Dominic Raines. That is his right. But today, I am asking Chicago to investigate why powerful men only care about women’s safety when they can use it as a weapon.”
The reporters went silent.
Clara lifted Maren’s envelope.
“And I am asking why someone from Mr. Whitmore’s campaign team offered money to rewrite a survivor’s story.”

Phones exploded with notifications.
Somewhere across the city, Nolan Whitmore watched his future begin to burn.
