Chapter 16 - The Arrest at the PierMarco ran to the place old Raines men always ran.

The docks.

For decades, the south pier had swallowed secrets: crates, cash, names, bodies of reputations if not bodies themselves.

But this time, Dominic did not arrive with soldiers.

He arrived with federal agents.

Clara waited in the command vehicle, refusing to stay home but agreeing not to step into danger.

Rain streaked the windshield.

On the pier, Marco shouted when he saw Dominic.

“You brought badges?”

Dominic stood beneath the floodlights, rain darkening his suit.

“You wanted the old family,” he called back. “It ends tonight.”

Marco laughed wildly. “Our fathers would spit on you.”

“My father is dead.”

“And you’re nothing without his fear.”

Dominic’s voice carried across the water.

“Good.”

Marco’s face twisted.

Agents moved in.

For one moment, Marco reached inside his coat.

Clara stopped breathing.

Dominic did not flinch.

“Don’t,” he said.

Something in his voice cut through the rain.

Not threat.

Grief.

Marco froze.

The agents tackled him.

A small object skidded across the wet concrete.

Not a gun.

A flash drive.

Later, Elise would call it the final archive: payments, routes, names, proof that Marco had been reviving the criminal network for years while using Dominic’s inherited companies as cover.

It cleared Dominic legally.

But publicly, the storm was only beginning.

As Marco was dragged past him, he spat, “She made you weak.”

Dominic looked toward the command vehicle.

Through the rain-streaked glass, he saw Clara watching him with tears in her eyes.

“No,” he said quietly. “She made weakness impossible.”

By morning, the arrests were everywhere.

Nolan Whitmore was under investigation.

Marco Raines was in federal custody.

Sloane Harrington had vanished from society pages.

And Clara Bennett Raines, once humiliated beneath crystal chandeliers, had become the woman every camera wanted to hear from.

But Clara did not want fame.

She wanted one thing.

To return to the ballroom where it began.
