Chapter 10 - The Trial Before the TrialThe legal trial would take months.

The public trial began immediately.

Marissa’s lawyer was a polished man named Victor Hales, famous for turning villains into victims before breakfast television finished pouring coffee. By Friday morning, he stood outside the courthouse telling cameras that his client was “a traumatized wife trapped inside a powerful family’s private war.”

Nathan watched the press conference from his office, surrounded by board members who suddenly looked very concerned about truth.

Richard had been arrested after officers found him hiding under the river bridge with $90,000 cash in his coat lining. Caleb Bell was charged with kidnapping, assault, and weapons violations.

But Marissa was the story.

Beautiful women with tearful eyes made better headlines than corporate ledgers.

Grace placed a cup of coffee on Nathan’s desk.

“You don’t have to watch.”

“Yes, I do.”

Onscreen, Victor Hales continued, “Mrs. Vale maintains that Eleanor Vale manipulated evidence to protect her own financial crimes.”

Nathan turned off the television before he threw something through it.

Grace hesitated. “The board is asking whether you’ll make a statement.”

Nathan laughed bitterly. “The same board that tried to remove me?”

“Half of them are terrified. The other half are pretending they weren’t in Richard’s pocket.”

Nathan looked out over the city skyline.

For years, he had believed leadership meant restraint. Calm statements. Private pain. Never showing blood in public.

Marissa had counted on that.

So had Richard.

They knew Nathan would protect the family name even while they used it to strangle him.

Not anymore.

That afternoon, Nathan walked into Vale Construction’s auditorium in front of employees, investors, reporters, and cameras.

His mother sat beside the stage in her wheelchair.

She wore navy blue, her silver hair pinned back, her chin lifted.

When Nathan stepped to the microphone, the room went silent.

“My name is Nathan Vale,” he began. “Last night, my mother helped expose a criminal conspiracy inside my home and my company.”

Camera shutters clicked.

“My wife, Marissa Vale, has claimed she was afraid of me. She has claimed my mother is confused. She has claimed this family is using power to silence her.”

He looked directly into the cameras.

“She is right about one thing. Powerful families can hide ugly truths.”

A murmur moved through the room.

Nathan continued.

“For too long, I trusted the wrong people. I ignored warnings. I mistook charm for love and silence for peace. Because of that, my mother suffered in her own home.”

Eleanor’s eyes glistened.

Nathan turned a page.

“Today, Vale Construction is releasing evidence to law enforcement, auditors, and the public regarding financial crimes committed by Richard Vale and his associates.”

Several board members shifted uncomfortably.

“And regarding Marissa Vale,” Nathan said, “we will not try her in the media. We will do something stronger.”

He paused.

“We will tell the truth.”

The screen behind him lit up.

Not the full police evidence.

Only one permitted clip.

Marissa in the kitchen.

Candlestick raised.

Eleanor in the wheelchair below her.

Nathan entering.

Put it down!

The auditorium gasped.

Nathan faced the cameras again.

“My mother is not confused.”

Eleanor slowly lifted her hand.

The room erupted in applause.

Nathan did not smile.

Across town, in a holding cell, Marissa watched the same broadcast.

Her face remained blank until Nathan said the final words.

“My marriage is over. But the truth is just beginning.”

Then Marissa leaned back and whispered to her lawyer:

“Bring me the girl.”

Victor Hales frowned.

“What girl?”

May you like

Marissa smiled.

“The one Nathan never knew about.”
