Chapter 11 - The Girl at the GateThree days after Nathan’s statement, a teenage girl appeared at the Vale estate gate.

She was seventeen, maybe eighteen, with dark hair cut blunt at her shoulders and eyes too old for her face. She wore a denim jacket despite the summer heat and carried a backpack that looked packed for escape, not travel.

Security called Nathan immediately.

“There’s a girl here asking for Mrs. Vale.”

Nathan froze. “Marissa?”

“Yes, sir. She says her name is Lily Bell.”

Bell.

Nathan drove from the office in twelve minutes.

By the time he reached the gatehouse, Eleanor was already there in her wheelchair, wrapped in a cream shawl, staring through the glass at the girl outside.

Nathan crouched beside her. “Do you know her?”

Eleanor shook her head.

But her eyes were troubled.

Nathan opened the gate only after two security guards stepped close.

The girl looked at him without flinching.

“You’re Nathan,” she said.

“Yes.”

“I need to see Marissa.”

“That’s not possible.”

Her mouth tightened. “She told me to come here if anything happened.”

Nathan felt the old nausea return. “Who is she to you?”

The girl looked toward the house, then back at him.

“My sister.”

Nathan glanced at Eleanor.

The records had said Marissa had a brother, Caleb. Nothing about a sister.

“Marissa told me her family was dead,” he said.

Lily gave a humorless laugh. “She tells people whatever gets her fed.”

Security shifted.

Nathan softened his voice. “Are you in danger?”

Lily’s eyes flicked to the road behind her.

That was answer enough.

They brought her inside but not beyond the front sitting room. Eleanor insisted on staying. Nathan agreed.

Lily sat on the edge of the sofa, backpack clutched between her knees.

“Marissa said if police came, I should get the black envelope from your mother’s room.”

Eleanor’s eyes sharpened.

Nathan kept his voice even. “What black envelope?”

“I don’t know. She said Eleanor stole it from her.”

Eleanor grabbed her notepad.

Lie.

Lily read it and looked away.

Nathan studied her. “Did Marissa send you here?”

“No.”

“Then why come?”

For the first time, Lily looked scared.

“Because Caleb called me from jail. He said if I didn’t get it, people would come looking for me.”

Nathan exchanged a glance with Eleanor.

“Who?” he asked.

Lily whispered, “The Hollis family.”

Eleanor’s pen slipped from her fingers.

Nathan picked it up quickly.

“Mom?”

She wrote one word.

Slowly.

Painfully.

Father.

Nathan stared.

“My father?”

Eleanor closed her eyes.

Lily unzipped her backpack and pulled out a folded photograph.

“I found this in Marissa’s storage unit,” she said. “I think it’s why she picked you.”

Nathan took the photograph.

It was old, creased, and stained.

His father stood beside a younger Richard Vale.

And between them was a woman Nathan had never seen.

On the back, someone had written:

Hollis settlement — final payment.

Nathan looked at Eleanor.

“What settlement?”

Eleanor’s face crumpled.

For the first time since the nightmare began, Nathan saw something worse than fear in his mother’s eyes.

Shame.
