Chapter 15 - The Girl Who Lied TwiceLily was gone by morning.

Her guesthouse bed was neatly made. The security camera outside had looped the same empty hallway for forty-two minutes. On the pillow sat the mug of tea she had never drunk.

Nathan found the note under it.

I’m sorry. She said you’d find Caroline and ruin everything.

No signature.

Detective Monroe looked ready to break something.

“She played us.”

Nathan shook his head. “Or Marissa did.”

“Maybe both.”

Eleanor sat in her wheelchair by the window, devastated but not surprised. The cassette tape had revealed that Caroline Hollis feared a young girl claiming to be her daughter. But the timeline made no sense. Lily was too young to be that girl thirty years ago.

Unless Caroline had meant someone else.

Marissa.

Nathan replayed the tape.

Don’t trust the girl who says she is my daughter.

Caroline had doubted Marissa’s identity.

That single sentence threatened Marissa’s entire revenge story.

Grace uncovered the next piece by noon.

There was no birth record linking Marissa Bell to Caroline Hollis.

There was no adoption file.

No guardianship.

No school record.

Marissa had appeared in Caroline’s life at age sixteen under unclear circumstances, claiming to be the daughter Caroline had given up as a teenager. Caroline accepted her at first.

Then something changed.

Two months later, Caroline vanished.

Nathan stared at the records. “Marissa may not be Caroline’s daughter.”

Grace nodded. “And Lily may not be Marissa’s daughter either.”

Every relationship around Marissa was a costume.

Wife.

Victim.

Daughter.

Sister.

Mother.

All masks.

Detective Monroe issued a missing witness alert for Lily, but Nathan knew the girl would not be found unless she wanted to be. She had learned from a master.

That evening, Marissa requested a meeting with Nathan.

Monroe advised against it.

Nathan went anyway.

Marissa entered the jail conference room in a beige uniform, wrists cuffed, hair pulled back. Without makeup, she looked younger and older at once.

Nathan sat across from her.

“Where is Lily?”

Marissa smiled faintly. “Safe.”

“From who?”

“From you.”

“She isn’t Caroline’s granddaughter, is she?”

For the first time, Marissa’s smile thinned.

Nathan leaned forward. “And you weren’t Caroline’s daughter.”

Marissa’s eyes hardened.

“There it is,” she whispered. “Eleanor’s final poison.”

“Caroline said it on tape.”

Marissa went very still.

Nathan watched the news hit her.

She had not known about the cassette.

Good.

“Caroline took me in,” Marissa said. “That made her my mother more than blood ever could.”

“And then?”

“And then your family destroyed her.”

“Richard destroyed her.”

“Richard gave me proof.”

“Richard used you.”

Marissa slammed her cuffed hands on the table. “You don’t get to make me stupid just because you finally stopped being blind.”

Nathan held her stare. “Where is Lily?”

Marissa leaned back.

“You still don’t understand,” she said softly. “Lily isn’t running from me.”

Nathan’s blood chilled.

“She’s running from Caroline.”

The door opened behind Marissa.

Detective Monroe stepped in, face grim.

“Nathan,” she said, “Vermont police found Caroline Hollis.”

Marissa smiled.

“Alive?” Nathan asked.

May you like

Monroe looked at Marissa, then back at him.

“Yes,” she said. “And she says Eleanor Vale tried to have her killed.”
