Chapter 12 - The Hollis SecretEleanor refused to explain in front of Lily.

That alone told Nathan the truth was worse than he wanted.

He asked Grace to arrange a safe place for the girl in the guesthouse, with security outside and food delivered. Lily accepted with the exhausted obedience of someone who had learned not to trust kindness until it lasted more than an hour.

Then Nathan wheeled Eleanor into the library and closed the door.

“Mom,” he said, “what did my father do?”

Eleanor stared at the rain tapping against the tall windows.

For several seconds, Nathan feared she would hide behind silence again.

Then she wrote.

He paid to make a problem disappear.

Nathan’s stomach tightened.

“What problem?”

Her pen hovered.

Then:

A woman named Caroline Hollis.

Nathan had never heard the name.

Eleanor kept writing, slowly but relentlessly.

Caroline Hollis had worked in accounting at Vale Construction thirty years earlier. She discovered illegal payments tied to Richard’s side deals. Nathan’s father, Daniel Vale Sr., had not started the scheme, but he had signed the settlement that buried it.

Caroline was paid to leave.

Then she vanished.

Nathan read the words twice.

“Vanished?”

Eleanor nodded.

“Did Dad know what happened to her?”

Eleanor’s hand trembled.

I don’t know.

Nathan paced the library, anger rising with each step. “You let me worship him.”

Eleanor flinched.

He regretted the words instantly but could not take them back.

“He taught me honesty,” Nathan said. “He built half this city giving speeches about integrity.”

Eleanor wrote one sentence.

Good men can do cowardly things.

Nathan looked away.

The sentence hurt because it sounded true.

A knock came at the door.

Grace entered, face pale. “Nathan, there’s something online.”

Not another video.

This time it was a document dump.

Anonymous files had been posted across social media and sent to every major news outlet.

The headline spreading fastest was brutal:

VALE FAMILY PAID HUSH MONEY TO MISSING EMPLOYEE.

Marissa had released the Hollis secret.

From jail.

Nathan opened the files.

Some were real.

Some were altered.

One forged memo made it appear Eleanor had personally ordered Caroline Hollis threatened.

Nathan slammed the laptop shut.

“She’s poisoning everything.”

Eleanor wrote quickly.

Find Caroline.

Nathan stared at her.

“You think she’s alive?”

Eleanor underlined it.

Find Caroline.

Grace stepped forward. “I can search public records.”

Nathan looked toward the guesthouse where Lily Bell was now hiding with more secrets than luggage.

“Start with Hollis,” he said. “Then search Bell.”

Grace frowned. “Bell?”

“Marissa picked my family for a reason. I want to know how she connects to Caroline Hollis.”

That night, Lily knocked on the library door.

Nathan opened it.

She held a second photograph.

“I lied earlier,” she said.

Nathan did not move.

“Marissa isn’t my sister.”

Eleanor’s eyes narrowed.

Lily swallowed.

“She’s my mother.”

The room went still.

“And Caroline Hollis,” Lily whispered, “was my grandmother.”
