Chapter 7 - The Unravelling of DorothyThe restraining order bought us a temporary peace, but in a small community, toxicity always finds a way to leak through the cracks.

With Tyler fired from his high-paying executive job and stripped of custody, the reality of their situation began to sink in at Dorothy’s house. Without Tyler’s income, they could no longer afford the private overnight nursing aide who had been sitting in the living room watching television while Tyler played mad scientist with my milk.

Two weeks after the court hearing, I received an unexpected visitor at my home: Mrs. Gable, the home health care nurse who had been assigned to Dorothy’s case through the local medical agency.

My mother invited her into the living room while I finished nursing Maya—who, away from the stress and back on an uninterrupted breast milk diet, had gained nearly two pounds and was blooming with rosy, healthy cheeks.

"Mrs. Miller," Mrs. Gable said softly, taking a seat across from me. "I shouldn't officially be here, but as a nurse, I felt morally obligated to come talk to you."

"Is this about Dorothy?" I asked, keeping my tone guarded.

"Yes," Mrs. Gable sighed. "I was the nurse on duty the night you walked into that kitchen. I want to apologize to you. I was hired by Tyler privately, and he paid me under the table to keep quiet about what he was bringing into that house. He told me it was an 'agreed family arrangement.' I had no idea he was stealing it from a starving baby until I saw your video online."

"Thank you for saying that," I said. "Why are you here now?"

Mrs. Gable leaned in closer. "Because the whole narrative they built is starting to crumble. Dorothy doesn't have stage three terminal breast cancer, Sarah."

I froze. The room seemed to lose all air. "What did you just say?"

"Dorothy was diagnosed with early-stage, localized ductal carcinoma eight months ago," Mrs. Gable revealed, pulling out an official clinic discharge summary. "She had a successful lumpectomy. She underwent mild preventative radiation. She has been in full remission for four months. She is cancer-free."

I sat in absolute shock. "She's... she's in remission?"

"She exaggerates her symptoms to keep Tyler under her control," Mrs. Gable explained, disgust clear in her voice. "When she read an article online claiming breast milk was a 'superfood' that prevents cancer recurrence, she told Tyler she felt weak and that her tumors were coming back. She fed his hero complex. She convinced him that taking your milk was the only thing keeping her alive."

"She made him steal from his own child... for a fake relapse?" My mother gasped, covering her mouth in sheer horror.

"It wasn't just to get the milk," Mrs. Gable added. "It was about control. Dorothy couldn't stand that Tyler was giving attention, money, and devotion to a new wife and baby. She wanted to prove to herself that Tyler would choose her over his own daughter. And Tyler was so psychologically enmeshed, he fell right into her trap."

A terrifying chill ran down my spine.

It hadn't just been a medical delusion. It had been a calculated, sinister game of emotional dominance played by a mother who could not let her son go—and a son who was so broken he was willing to sacrifice his own child to satisfy his mother's sick desire for control.

"Does Tyler know she's in remission?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper.

"No," Mrs. Gable said, shaking her head. "Dorothy hides her medical files from him. She lets him believe she is dying so he pays her bills, stays at her house, and obeys her every command."

I looked down at sweet baby Maya sleeping peacefully in my arms.

"Well," I said, a cold, hard smile forming on my face. "It's time Tyler found out what he ruined his life for."
