Chapter 9 - The Settlement and the Clean BreakSix weeks later, the final divorce and settlement hearing was held in a quiet mediation room.

The fire in Tyler was completely extinguished. Sitting beside his public defender, he looked like a shell of a human being. Without a job, facing pending misdemeanor charges for property damage at his mother's house, and disgraced in the eyes of his community, he had zero leverage left.
Victoria Vance laid out our final terms on the mahogany table:
Full Custody: Absolute, sole legal and physical custody of Maya to me, with no visitation rights for Tyler until Maya reaches five years of age, and only after he completes two years of court-monitored psychological therapy.
Asset Division: Full ownership of our marital home granted to me, with Tyler relinquishing all equity claims as restitution for child endangerment and legal fees.
Child Support: A strict payment order calculated against his potential future earning capacity.
Permanent Restraining Order: A lifetime protective order prohibiting Tyler, Dorothy, and Brenda from ever contacting Maya or myself.
Tyler’s attorney looked at the documents, then leaned over to whisper in Tyler’s ear. "Sign it. If this goes to a criminal trial for child neglect, you will serve actual jail time."
Tyler took the pen. His hand was shaking so violently he could barely hold it.
He looked across the table at me. "Sarah... please. Just tell me one thing. Do you hate me?"
I looked at him calmly. The anger that had burned in my chest for weeks was gone, replaced by a cool, clean detachment.
"I don't hate you, Tyler," I said honestly. "Hate requires feeling something for you. I just pity you. You traded a bright future, a loving wife, and a beautiful daughter for a woman who threw you to the cops the second you stopped being useful to her."
Tyler flinched as if I had slapped him across the face.

He pressed the pen to the paper and signed his name on every line.
When he finished, he pushed the papers across the table, stood up slowly, and walked out of the room without looking back.
