Chapter 13 - THE BROTHER WITHOUT A GRAVENathan did not sleep.

By dawn, the mansion looked less like a home and more like a command center. Lawyers occupied the dining room. Security men guarded every entrance. Richard worked through boxes pulled from the chapel archive. Grace remained upstairs with Lily, refusing to let the child out of her sight.
Nathan stood alone in his father’s old bedroom.
He had avoided this room since Charles died.
Everything remained exactly as Evelyn had left it. Dark wood furniture. Monogrammed cufflinks. A framed photograph of Charles shaking hands with governors and senators.
No pictures of Nathan.
No pictures of love.
Nathan opened drawer after drawer until he found a locked compartment built into the back of the wardrobe.
The silver archive key did not fit.
But a small key hidden behind Charles’s framed military medal did.
Inside was a baby blanket.
Blue.
Folded with unnatural care.
Beneath it lay a hospital bracelet.
COLE, ADRIAN. MALE.
Nathan sat down hard on the bed.
Adrian Cole.
His brother had a name.
The bedroom door opened.
Grace stood there.
She saw his face and entered quietly.
“Nathan?”
He handed her the bracelet.
Grace read it.
Her expression softened with horror.
“You didn’t know.”
“No.”
She sat beside him.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Nathan stared at the baby blanket.
“My father erased a child from his own house.”
Grace’s voice was gentle. “He erased more than one.”
Nathan closed his eyes.
That truth hit exactly where she intended.
Adrian.
Lily.
Grace.
All victims of the same man.
Richard appeared at the doorway.
“I found something.”
Nathan stood immediately.
In the study, Richard had laid out documents across the desk.
Medical records.
Insurance forms.
A death certificate.
But the death certificate had no body identification attached.
“No grave,” Richard said. “No burial record. No funeral home invoice.”
Nathan’s heart pounded.
“Adrian didn’t die.”
Richard’s face was grim.
“I cannot prove that yet.”
Grace looked at the dates.
“Adrian was born two years before Nathan.”
Richard nodded.
“And vanished from all public records at eleven months.”
Nathan stared at the documents.
“Why?”
Richard handed him a second file.
The Ashford Succession file.
Elizabeth Ashford had not only had Victoria with Charles.
She had been engaged to someone before him.
A pediatric surgeon.
Dr. Martin Vale.
Grace recognized the name first.
She turned pale.
“What?” Nathan asked.
Grace looked up slowly.
“Dr. Vale treated Lily last year.”
Nathan froze.
Richard’s eyes sharpened.
“Mercy Ridge Clinic?”
Grace nodded.
Nathan grabbed his phone.
“Mason. Find Dr. Martin Vale.”
Mason answered in seconds.
But his voice was already tense.
“We have a problem.”
Nathan’s stomach dropped.
“What?”
“Dr. Vale just checked Lily out of Mercy Ridge’s medical system.”
Grace grabbed the phone.
“What does that mean?”
Mason hesitated.
“It means he accessed her full genetic file ten minutes ago.”
Nathan looked at the baby bracelet in his hand.
Adrian Cole had disappeared as an infant.
Lily’s genetic file had just been stolen.
And somewhere, Victoria was meeting a dead man.
Nathan finally understood.
May you like
This was no longer about inheritance.
Someone was rebuilding a family tree that Charles Cole had cut down.
