Chapter 7 - THE FIREPROOF TRUTHThe archive had been built to survive lawsuits, scandals, and enemies.

But it had not been built to survive Nathan Cole finally choosing the truth over the family name.

Mason found the old emergency conduit behind a row of filing cabinets. Charles Cole had installed it for one reason: if the archive ever flooded, water could drain into the chapel’s old crypt system.

Nathan saw something else.

A way out.

The grate was rusted, narrow, and bolted from the inside.

Mason fired two silenced shots into the lock.

Grace flinched.

Nathan looked at her.

“I’m sorry.”

“Don’t apologize. Move.”

Mason pulled the grate free. Cold air rushed into the archive. The tunnel beyond was barely wide enough for a grown man to crawl.

Nathan went first.

Grace followed, teeth clenched against the pain in her shoulder.

The tunnel smelled of wet stone and old earth. Every few feet, roots had cracked through the ceiling. Nathan dragged himself forward, scraping his palms raw, thinking of Lily’s voice through the intercom.

Mommy.

He had heard that word before today only as something meant for other men.

Now it was the only word in his head.

The tunnel opened beneath the chapel’s side garden.

Mason pushed the iron cover upward.

Snow fell into the hole.

Nathan climbed out first.

The chapel yard was empty.

Too empty.

Victoria was gone.

So was her car.

Nathan checked his phone.

One bar.

He called the mansion.

No answer.

Again.

No answer.

Grace’s face went white.

Nathan dialed Mrs. Alvarez.

This time, someone answered.

But it was not Mrs. Alvarez.

It was Evelyn Cole.

“Nathan.”

He froze.

Grace saw his face and reached for the phone.

He put it on speaker.

Evelyn’s voice sounded calm, almost tired.

“You forced this.”

Nathan’s voice was deadly. “Where is Lily?”

“With me.”

Grace made a broken sound.

Nathan closed his eyes.

“Mother, listen carefully. If you hurt her—”

“I am not Victoria,” Evelyn snapped. “I do not swing sticks at children.”

“No,” Grace said, shaking. “You just steal them before they’re born.”

A pause.

Evelyn’s voice lowered.

“You should have stayed gone, Miss Bennett.”

Nathan looked toward the mansion in the distance.

“What do you want?”

“The archive.”

“You already have Victoria.”

“Victoria is emotional. She is useful only when pointed in the right direction.”

Nathan almost laughed.

Even her own secret daughter was a weapon to her.

Evelyn continued. “Bring me the file marked Ashford Succession. Bring it alone. No police. No security.”

“Where?”

“The place where Grace first learned what the Cole name really means.”

Grace whispered, “No.”

Nathan turned to her.

“What place?”

Her eyes filled with horror.

“The old maternity wing.”

Nathan did not understand.

Then Grace said, “That’s where your father tried to make me sign Lily away.”

Nathan’s world went silent.

Evelyn spoke through the phone.

“You have one hour.”

The call ended.

Grace stared at Nathan.

“She won’t trade. She never trades. She destroys proof, then destroys witnesses.”

Nathan looked at the chapel.

Then at the archive hidden beneath it.

Then at Grace.

“Then we don’t bring her the proof.”

Grace’s eyes sharpened.

“What do we bring?”

May you like

Nathan’s expression turned cold.

“A live broadcast.”
