Chapter 3 - THE HOUSE THAT BETRAYED HIMNathan locked the mansion within three minutes.

Every exit.

Every gate.

Every service corridor.

The security team arrived with weapons visible beneath their jackets, but Nathan did not feel safer. Not after seeing that photograph. Not after realizing someone had walked through his home, reached the bedroom door, taken a picture of his sleeping daughter, and left without being seen.

Grace sat on the sofa with Lily curled against her lap, her face colorless.

Nathan stood in front of the security monitors.

Black screens.

All of them.

“Who shut them down?” he demanded.

His head of security, Mason Reed, typed fast, then swore under his breath.

“It wasn’t a shutdown.”

Nathan looked at him.

“What was it?”

“A redirect.”

Mason turned the screen toward him. “The system is still recording, but the live feed was rerouted to an external server.”

Nathan’s blood went cold.

“Where?”

Mason hesitated.

Nathan stepped closer. “Where?”

“Cole Industries.”

Silence spread through the room.

Grace looked up.

“Nathan…”

He shook his head.

“No. My company’s internal server is secured.”

Mason’s expression said otherwise.

“Someone with executive-level access opened a private channel.”

Nathan knew the answer before he asked.

“Victoria?”

Mason shook his head.

“No. Her credentials were suspended last night after you ended the engagement.”

“Then whose?”

Mason typed again.

The name appeared on screen.

EVELYN COLE.

Nathan stared.

His mother.

For years, Evelyn Cole had lived mostly out of the public eye. Elegant. Reserved. Fragile after her husband’s death. The kind of woman who knew how to sit silently at board dinners and still make powerful men feel judged.

Nathan had thought she was innocent.

He should have known better.

Grace whispered, “Your mother knew too.”

Nathan did not answer.

Because he suddenly remembered something.

Five years ago, the morning after Grace vanished, his mother had sat beside him at breakfast and said, “Some women are lessons, Nathan. Do not build a life around a lesson.”

At the time, he had thought she was comforting him.

Now he understood.

She had been burying Grace alive.

His phone rang.

The caller ID displayed one word.

Mother.

Everyone turned.

Nathan answered and put it on speaker.

Evelyn Cole’s voice filled the room.

“You should not have opened the envelope.”

Nathan’s face went still.

Grace clutched Lily tighter.

“You knew,” Nathan said.

A pause.

Then Evelyn sighed.

“Of course I knew.”

Nathan’s hand curled into a fist.

“You helped him.”

“I protected this family.”

“You helped steal my child.”

“No,” Evelyn said coldly. “I tried to prevent that child from destroying you.”

Lily flinched at the word child.

Nathan’s eyes changed.

“Say her name.”

Evelyn went silent.

Nathan’s voice dropped.

“Say. Her. Name.”

“She is not part of this family.”

Nathan looked at Grace and Lily.

Then he said the words Evelyn had feared her entire life.

“She is the only family I have left.”

Evelyn laughed softly.

“You sound just like your father before he became useful.”

Nathan turned toward the window.

“Where is Victoria?”

Another pause.

Then Evelyn said, “Safe.”

Nathan’s heart hammered.

“What did you do?”

“I gave you one chance to let this disappear quietly,” Evelyn said. “You chose a maid and a bastard over your name.”

Grace’s eyes filled with fury.

Nathan’s voice became ice.

“You have thirty seconds to tell me where Victoria is.”

“You still think Victoria is the danger?”

Nathan froze.

Evelyn’s voice lowered.

“Poor boy. You have no idea who Grace Bennett really is.”

The call ended.

Nathan turned toward Grace.

For the first time, Grace looked afraid of him.

Not because she had lied.

May you like

Because she had one secret left.

And Nathan could see it in her eyes.
