Chapter 4 - THE SECRET GRACE KEPTGrace had known this moment would come.

Not exactly like this.
Not with Lily trembling against her side and Nathan staring at her as if the ground beneath him had split open again.
But she had known.
Secrets did not stay buried around the Cole family.
They clawed their way out.
Nathan’s voice was quiet. “What did my mother mean?”
Grace looked at Lily.
Nathan followed her gaze.
“Mrs. Alvarez,” he said without turning.
The housekeeper stepped forward immediately.
“Take Lily to the library. Stay with her. No one enters. No one leaves.”
Lily clung to Grace.
“No, Mommy.”
Grace kissed her forehead.
“It’s okay, baby. I’m right here.”
Lily looked at Nathan.
He crouched carefully, keeping his distance.
“I’ll protect her,” he said.
Lily’s lip trembled.
“Promise?”
Nathan’s eyes shone.
“I promise on my life.”
The child let Mrs. Alvarez lead her away.
The second the library doors closed, Grace looked at Nathan.
“Your mother wants you to doubt me.”
“Then don’t give me a reason to.”
The words landed hard.
Grace swallowed.
“I didn’t come here as a maid by accident.”
Nathan went completely still.
“You what?”
“I applied under my mother’s maiden name. Grace Bennett was supposed to be gone. Grace Miller could get hired.”
Nathan stared at her.
“You came into my house intentionally.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Grace’s eyes filled.
“Because Lily was sick.”
Nathan’s anger faltered.
“What?”
Grace pulled a folded medical report from her bag. Her hands shook as she handed it to him.
Nathan read the diagnosis.
A rare immune disorder.
Treatable.
Expensive.
Urgent.
His vision blurred.
“She needed a genetic match,” Grace said. “Doctors said a biological parent would be the best place to start. I had already tested. I wasn’t enough.”
Nathan looked up slowly.
Grace’s voice broke.
“I came back because Lily needed you.”
For several seconds, Nathan could not speak.
All the anger he had prepared cracked under the weight of those words.
“Why didn’t you tell me the day you arrived?”
Grace laughed once, bitter and ashamed.
“Because your fiancée recognized me in the laundry room before I even made it through orientation.”
Nathan’s face hardened.
“Victoria knew you were here?”
“She cornered me. Told me if I said one word to you, Lily’s treatment file would disappear. Then two days later, the hospital called and said Lily had been removed from the priority list.”
Nathan’s hands began to shake.
Grace’s voice dropped.
“So I stayed quiet. I cleaned your floors. I watched you plan a wedding to the woman who helped destroy my life. And every day, I told myself I could survive anything as long as Lily got what she needed.”
Nathan looked toward the library doors.
“My daughter is sick.”
Grace nodded.
“She has been brave for a long time.”
Nathan covered his mouth, turning away.
Grace expected rage.
Instead, he whispered, “I missed everything.”
Grace’s own tears finally fell.
“Not everything.”
He looked back.
She stepped closer.
“You’re here now.”
Before Nathan could answer, Mason rushed in.
“We found the external server.”
Nathan straightened.
“Where?”
Mason looked at Grace, then back at Nathan.
“The old Cole chapel.”
Grace went pale.
Nathan pulled the silver key from his pocket.
“Then we go now.”
Grace grabbed his arm.
“No.”
He turned.
Her voice shook.
“Nathan, that chapel is where your father threatened me.”
May you like
A pause.
“And it’s where Victoria’s mother died.”
