Chapter 15 - THE CONVENT IN THE SNOWThe convent stood on a hill in Vermont, white and silent beneath falling snow.

It was called Saint Agnes House.

A place for women recovering from trauma, illness, addiction, and lives powerful men preferred forgotten.

Arabella arrived before dawn with Dante, Nico, Evelyn, Caleb, and Lila.

She had not planned to bring Lila.

But when the child woke screaming after another nightmare about walls closing in, Arabella understood something terrible and simple.

Lila had spent her whole life abandoned by truth.

No more.

A nun opened the door.

She was elderly, small, and fearless enough to look Dante Serrano up and down with disapproval.

“We do not accept visitors before morning prayer.”

Arabella stepped forward.

“I’m looking for Mara Vale.”

The nun’s face changed.

Not surprise.

Sorrow.

“Who are you?”

Arabella’s voice shook.

“Her daughter.”

The nun crossed herself.

They led Arabella through quiet halls smelling of wax, old wood, and winter. Lila held her hand. Dante walked behind them, silent as a shadow.

At the end of the hall, they entered a sunroom.

A woman sat near the window, brushing a doll’s hair.

Arabella stopped.

Mara Vale was older than memory. Her dark hair had turned silver. Her body was thin. Her eyes stared through the glass at snow-covered trees.

But the shape of her face was Arabella’s future.

The nun spoke softly. “Mara, you have visitors.”

Mara did not turn.

Arabella took one step.

“Mom?”

The word broke in the air.

Mara’s hand paused on the doll’s hair.

Slowly, she looked over.

Her eyes met Arabella’s.

Nothing.

No recognition.

No miracle.

Just polite confusion.

Arabella covered her mouth.

Lila pressed closer.

Mara smiled faintly at the child.

“What a pretty little bird,” she said.

Arabella nearly fell.

Dante steadied her.

The nun explained quietly. “She suffered severe trauma. Memory loss. Some days she knows her own name. Some days she does not.”

Arabella walked to her mother and knelt.

“My name is Arabella.”

Mara’s smile trembled.

“That was my daughter’s name.”

“I am your daughter.”

Mara looked at her carefully.

Then her eyes moved to the birthmark on Arabella’s neck.

Her breathing changed.

The doll slipped from her hands.

“Bella?”

Arabella sobbed.

Mara reached forward with shaking fingers and touched her face.

“My baby.”

Arabella collapsed into her mother’s lap like she was nineteen again, fifteen again, five again, every age at once. Mara held her weakly, crying into her hair.

Lila watched.

Arabella reached for her.

“This is Lila,” she whispered. “She’s my daughter.”

Mara looked at the child.

Something fierce moved through her broken eyes.

“Did he put you in the room?”

Lila nodded.

Mara began to shake.

Dante stepped closer.

“Mara, do you know where Malcolm kept the chapel evidence?”

Mara looked at him.

For one moment, her eyes cleared.

“Antonio’s boy.”

Dante froze.

“You knew my father.”

“He came for us,” she whispered. “He hid it under the chapel floor because he knew he might not make it out.”

“What did he hide?”

Mara gripped Arabella’s hand.

“The original Vale covenant. The one Malcolm could never destroy.”

Arabella leaned closer.

“What does it say?”

Mara’s voice dropped.

“If a Vale heir is hidden, harmed, or falsely declared dead by another trustee, all assets transfer immediately to the surviving heir or her child.”

Caleb whispered, “That would remove Malcolm from everything.”

Mara looked toward Lila.

“No,” she said.

Arabella followed her gaze.

The truth arrived cold and sharp.

“It would transfer to Lila.”

May you like

Mara nodded.

“And that is why he kept her alive.”
