Chapter 16 - THE CHAPEL FLOORThe Vale family chapel had not been used for worship in years.

It sat behind Vale Manor, gray stone covered in ivy, its stained-glass windows dark beneath the winter sky. Arabella remembered lighting candles there for her mother. She remembered her father kneeling alone after Mara “died.” She remembered Malcolm standing in the doorway, never entering, as if holy places made even liars uncomfortable.

Now floodlights covered the grounds. Federal agents guarded the manor. Reporters camped beyond the gate. Malcolm’s arrest had become a national scandal, but the deeper machinery still moved in shadows.

Dante did not ask permission to enter.

He broke the side door lock.

Arabella, Mara, Lila, Evelyn, Nico, and Caleb followed.

Mara walked slowly, leaning on Arabella’s arm. Some memories had returned during the drive. Others slipped away mid-sentence. But one thing remained clear.

“The wolf tile,” she said.

At the front of the chapel, beneath the altar, was a mosaic of the Vale crown.

But in the rear corner, almost hidden beneath dust, was a small tile showing a wolf.

Dante knelt.

His father’s symbol.

Nico handed him a crowbar.

The tile cracked free.

Underneath lay a metal box wrapped in oilcloth.

Dante opened it.

Inside were documents, photographs, cassette tapes, and a small handwritten note.

My son,

If you find this, I failed to come home.

Dante’s hand went still.

Arabella stepped back to give him space.

He read silently.

His father had known Malcolm Vale was staging deaths, laundering money through shipping routes, and moving people through private medical networks. Antonio had tried to protect Arabella and Mara because Sterling Vale had asked him for help.

The last line cut Dante open.

Tell Dante I wanted him to be better than me.

Dante folded the letter once.

His face showed nothing.

But Arabella saw his hand shake.

Inside the box, Evelyn found the original covenant.

Caleb found the clinic records.

Mara found a photograph.

Sterling Vale, Antonio Serrano, and Mara standing together in the chapel.

Behind them, nineteen-year-old Arabella smiled without knowing she was already being hunted.

Lila touched the photo.

“Is that Bird?”

Arabella smiled through tears.

“That was me.”

Lila studied it.

“You looked not scared.”

“No,” Arabella whispered. “I wasn’t yet.”

The chapel doors opened.

Everyone turned.

A line of armed federal agents entered.

At their center stood Senator Elaine Cross.

Dante raised his gun.

Agents raised theirs.

The senator lifted both hands.

“I’m not here for a fight.”

Dante smiled. “Then you came overdressed.”

She looked at Arabella.

“Malcolm escaped custody twenty minutes ago.”

The chapel went silent.

Caleb swore under his breath.

“How?” Dante asked.

“With help,” Cross said. “Not mine.”

Dante gave her a look.

She swallowed.

“I came because if Malcolm reaches the offshore server before you release those documents, everything disappears.”

Arabella held the covenant tighter.

“Why would we trust you?”

Cross looked at Mara.

Mara stared back with tired hatred.

“Because I helped hide your mother,” Cross said. “And I have spent twelve years pretending that was mercy.”

Mara whispered, “You left me there.”

“I know.”

“No,” Mara said. “You don’t.”

The senator lowered her eyes.

For the first time, she looked less like power and more like rot finally exposed to air.

Dante said, “Where’s Malcolm going?”

Cross answered, “The Vale data vault under Pier 41.”

Nico grimaced. “That place is a fortress.”

Arabella looked at the covenant, then at her daughter.

Malcolm had stolen her name, her father, her mother, her fiancé, her child, and twelve years of sky.

Now he wanted to erase the proof.

She handed Lila to Mara.

May you like

Then she looked at Dante.

“Take me to the pier.”
