Chapter 2 - The Maid Who Didn’t FlinchRosa did not scream.

That was the first thing everyone noticed.

The teacup exploded inches from her head, showering the polished marble with porcelain petals and gold-edged splinters, but Rosa Martinez stood perfectly still. Her gray uniform was dusted with white fragments. A thin red line opened along her cheek where a shard had kissed her skin. Still, she did not raise a hand to the wound.

She was staring at Mateo.

Not with fear.

With recognition.

The boy stood at the far end of the hallway, his chest heaving, his little hands curled into fists. His face had twisted itself into the ugly shape adults called defiance, but Rosa saw what the others refused to see. His eyes were not angry. They were terrified.

A younger maid named Lily gasped behind her.

“Mrs. Martinez, you’re bleeding.”

Rosa barely heard her.

Mateo backed against the wall as if the marble itself might swallow him. His dark hair fell across his forehead. His lips trembled, but he forced them into a snarl.

“Don’t come near me,” he said.

Rosa took one slow step forward.

The boy flinched so violently that the movement passed through the staff like a cold wind.

Rosa stopped.

That flinch told her everything.

A spoiled child did not flinch like that. A brat did not look at open doorways as if something might drag him through them. A violent little monster did not whisper three words so softly that only a woman who had spent her life listening from the shadows could hear them.

“Not the blue room.”

Rosa’s face changed.

The blood drained from it.

Behind her, a sharp click of expensive shoes struck the marble. Celeste Vale appeared at the top of the grand staircase, dressed in cream silk, her diamond bracelet catching the light with every step. She was Mateo’s stepmother, though the boy had never once called her that.

“What has he done now?” Celeste asked.

Her voice was calm, almost bored.

Mateo’s breathing turned ragged.

Rosa looked from the boy to Celeste. Then she did something no servant had ever done inside the Vale estate.

She stepped between them.

Celeste’s eyes narrowed.

“Move.”

Rosa did not move.

The house fell silent in a new way now. Not the silence of wealth. Not the silence of polished floors and closed doors. This was the silence before something breaks.

“Rosa,” Celeste said, smiling with her mouth and not her eyes, “remember your place.”

Rosa lifted her chin.

“My place is wherever a child is afraid.”

A soft gasp passed through the staff.

Celeste descended one more step.

“He threw a cup at your head.”

“He missed me,” Rosa said.

“He could have killed you.”

Rosa turned slightly, never fully taking her eyes off Mateo.

“No,” she said. “Someone else is killing him.”

The words landed harder than the teacup.

Celeste went still.

At that exact moment, the front doors opened, and Lucian Vale walked in.

The owner of the mansion had returned home.

And every servant in the hall knew someone was about to pay.
