Chapter 9 - The Box Beneath the AngelThe box was waterproof, sealed, and heavier than it looked.

Lucian carried it back inside with both hands, as if it might explode.
Margot followed him, no longer graceful. Her heels struck the floor too hard. Celeste moved beside her, whispering fast, but the old woman ignored her.
Isabella sat in the library with Mateo pressed against her side. Rosa stood near the door, refusing to leave.
Lucian placed the box on the desk.
“Open it,” Isabella said.
Margot laughed thinly.
“This is absurd. Some old trinket box from a disturbed woman.”
Isabella looked at her.
“You used to call me that when you drugged my tea.”
The room went silent.
Lucian stared at his wife.
“Drugged?”
Isabella’s expression did not change.
“You were gone most nights. Meetings. Flights. Deals. Your mother said I was fragile after the baby. Celeste was my friend then. She brought me tea. Dr. Harlan said the dizziness was anxiety.”
Celeste swallowed.
“I helped you.”
“You helped them bury me.”
Lucian opened the box.
Inside were three items.
A flash drive.
A handwritten ledger.
And a tiny blue bracelet that had belonged to Mateo as a baby.
Rosa picked up the bracelet with trembling fingers.
“I put this on him the night he was born.”
Isabella nodded.
“I kept it so I would remember I wasn’t crazy.”
Lucian inserted the flash drive into the library computer.
The first video appeared.
Isabella, younger and frightened, sat at the same desk.
“If you are watching this,” she said on the screen, “then Margot succeeded.”
Lucian’s hand covered his mouth.
The Isabella on the screen continued.
“I discovered that the Vale Foundation was being used to move money through shell charities. Margot controlled the signatures. Celeste Whitmore delivered documents between accounts. Dr. Harlan provided medical reports claiming I was unstable. I am afraid they will take Mateo from me. Lucian, if you ever loved me, protect our son.”
The recording ended.
No one breathed.
Then another file opened automatically.
A security video.
A rainy night.
A car.
Isabella being pulled from the passenger seat alive.
Margot standing under an umbrella.
Celeste crying beside her, but not from grief.
Dr. Harlan giving an injection.
And Lucian’s black car passing in the background without stopping.
Lucian staggered back.
“I didn’t see.”
Isabella’s voice was quiet.
“No,” she said. “You didn’t look.”
Margot suddenly grabbed a letter opener from the desk.
Rosa stepped in front of Mateo.
But Margot did not lunge at the boy.
She lunged at the computer.
Lucian caught her wrist.
For the first time in his life, he looked at his mother with hatred.
“Call the police,” he said.

Rosa picked up the phone.
Celeste bolted.
