Chapter 13 - The RecordingsThe first recording was Margot’s voice.

“She must never speak to federal investigators.”

Then Celeste’s.

“What about the boy?”

Margot again.

“He is young. Children can be trained to forget.”

Rosa sat down because her knees could no longer hold her.

Mateo listened with his face pressed against Isabella’s side. Lucian stood near the fireplace, one hand braced on the mantel, his back rigid.

The recordings went on.

Payments.

Forged documents.

Medical reports.

Instructions on how often Isabella could see Mateo through the hidden observation panel, just enough to keep her obedient, never enough to let them truly reunite.

Then came the recording that shattered Lucian.

His own voice appeared.

Not guilty.

Not confessing.

Worse.

Indifferent.

It was from six years earlier, after Isabella’s supposed accident. Margot told him Isabella had been unstable before the crash. Lucian’s recorded response was exhausted, cold, broken by grief but still cruel.

“Handle whatever needs handling. I can’t keep stopping my life for her episodes.”

The room went silent after that.

Lucian closed his eyes.

Isabella did not look at him.

Mateo did.

That hurt more.

“Dad?” the boy whispered.

Lucian turned.

Mateo’s face was small and open and devastated.

“You said handle me too?”

“No,” Lucian said immediately. “No, never.”

But his certainty sounded weak even to himself.

Margot smiled faintly.

“You see? He knew enough.”

Lucian turned on her.

“I knew nothing.”

“You knew what suited you,” she replied. “You wanted peace. I gave it to you.”

Rosa stood.

“No.”

Everyone looked at her.

Rosa’s voice shook, but she did not lower it.

“You gave him silence. There’s a difference.”

Margot’s eyes narrowed.

“Do not lecture me.”

“I cleaned your rooms after you cried in private because your husband loved power more than you. I brought you tea when your hands shook. I watched you become the same kind of person you hated.”

Margot’s face cracked for half a second.

Then hardened.

“You know nothing.”

“I know that pain doesn’t give you the right to pass it down.”

The words landed softly, but they landed everywhere.

Detective Reyes closed the file.

“Margot Vale, you are under arrest.”

For the first time, the matriarch of the Vale family looked old.

As officers moved toward her, she looked at Lucian.

“You will lose everything.”

Lucian looked around the room—at the wife he had failed, the son he had not heard, the maid who had risked her livelihood to speak, and the mansion that had protected monsters in silk.

“No,” he said quietly. “I already did.”

Margot was taken away in pearls.

The cameras outside the gates caught everything.

By midnight, the world knew the dead wife was alive.
