Chapter 6 - Drawings of a Child Who Wasn’t HeardThe blue room was not a dungeon.

That made it worse.
It had been designed to look gentle. Soft blue walls. A narrow bed. A velvet chair. A little table with colored pencils. There were shelves filled with old children’s books and a music box shaped like a white horse.
But there were locks on the outside of the cabinets.
A camera in the ceiling.
Scratch marks near the door.
And drawings everywhere.
Hundreds of them.
Mateo as a baby. Mateo at five. Mateo with missing teeth. Mateo sleeping. Mateo crying. Mateo standing in the garden beside a woman whose face had been drawn with trembling hands but unmistakable love.
Lucian walked toward the nearest wall.
His fingers hovered over one picture.
Isabella had signed it.
I saw him today. He is taller. They said I imagined it.
Lucian’s breath broke.
Rosa crossed herself.
“Oh, my God.”
Behind them, Celeste stood at the base of the stairs, pale and furious.
“You don’t understand.”
Lucian turned slowly.
“Then explain.”
Celeste folded her arms tightly, as if holding herself together.
“Isabella was unstable.”
“She died.”
“She should have.”
The room seemed to tilt.
Rosa moved before Lucian did, stepping between him and Celeste just as she had stepped between Celeste and Mateo.
“Choose your next words carefully,” Rosa said.
Celeste’s eyes burned.
“You think you’re some hero because you scrub floors and cry over children? You don’t know what this family was before you came here.”
Rosa’s voice stayed low.
“I know what it became.”
Lucian walked to the small table. There was a notebook there, its cover faded and stained. He opened it.
The first page had one sentence written over and over.
My name is Isabella Vale, and I am alive.
He turned another page.
They tell him I am dead.
Another.
They bring him here when he misbehaves.
Another.
He thinks he is being punished because he remembers me.
Lucian’s hands began to shake.
For years, the world had called Mateo troubled. Violent. Difficult. Too much like his mother. Too sensitive. Too wild. Lucian had hired specialists, tutors, behavioral experts, private doctors.
All of them had taken his money.
None of them had opened the wall.
Rosa picked up the music box.
Its white horse was cracked.
She wound it once.
The lullaby played.
From the far corner came a whisper.
“Mateo?”
Lucian turned.
There was another door inside the blue room.
A smaller one.
Hidden behind a curtain.
It opened before anyone touched it.
A woman stood there in a white nightgown, thin as a ghost.
Lucian dropped the notebook.
“Isabella.”
Her eyes found him.

Then moved past him.
“Where is my son?”
