Chapter 14 - The Mansion on Every ScreenThe story hit the internet before dawn.

BILLIONAIRE’S DEAD WIFE FOUND ALIVE INSIDE MANSION.

SECRET ROOM DISCOVERED IN VALE ESTATE.

HEIR CALLED “TROUBLED” AFTER YEARS OF FAMILY COVER-UP.

By breakfast, the mansion gates were surrounded by news vans. Helicopters hovered above the estate. Reporters shouted questions at anyone who entered or left.

Rosa stood at an upstairs window and watched the world finally stare at the house that had spent decades staring down at everyone else.

She should have felt satisfied.

She felt sick.

Mateo refused to leave Isabella’s room.

Not because he was afraid of her.

Because he was afraid she would disappear again.

Every time she slept, he woke her.

Every time she went to the bathroom, he stood outside the door.

Every time Lucian entered, Mateo went quiet.

That silence hurt more than his screams ever had.

Lucian tried once to sit beside him.

Mateo shifted closer to Isabella.

Lucian stopped.

“I deserve that,” he said.

Isabella looked at him for the first time that morning.

“Yes.”

He nodded.

There was no defense left.

Downstairs, Detective Reyes coordinated with federal agents who had arrived in dark suits and colder moods. The Vale Foundation offices had been sealed. Accounts frozen. Employees questioned.

Dr. Harlan had already begun talking.

Men like him always did when the room got too small.

Celeste refused to speak.

Margot demanded her lawyer and mineral water.

Rosa moved through the house like a ghost, answering questions from investigators, comforting staff, and avoiding cameras.

Near noon, Lucian found her in the kitchen, wrapping bandages around her cut feet.

He stopped in the doorway.

“I didn’t know you were hurt.”

Rosa did not look up.

“You didn’t know many things.”

He accepted that.

“I owe you an apology.”

“You owe your son more.”

“Yes.”

“And your wife.”

“Yes.”

“And every person in this house who learned to be afraid of telling you the truth.”

Lucian flinched.

Rosa finally looked at him.

“You built a mansion where everyone whispered. Children don’t survive whispers, Mr. Vale. They survive someone opening the door.”

His eyes reddened.

“I don’t know how to fix this.”

Rosa tied the bandage.

“You don’t fix it. You face it.”

A noise came from the hallway.

Mateo stood there.

He had heard.

Lucian turned slowly.

The boy held the cracked white horse music box.

“Mama said you used to sing too,” Mateo said.

Lucian’s face broke.

“I did.”

Mateo looked at him for a long time.

“Why did you stop?”

Lucian had no answer that did not sound like guilt.

So he told the truth.

“Because I became someone I don’t like.”

Mateo considered that.

Then he held out the music box.

“It’s broken.”

Lucian took it carefully.

“I’ll repair it.”

Mateo’s eyes narrowed.

“Don’t send it away.”

“I won’t.”

“Do it yourself.”

Lucian looked at the tiny cracked horse in his hands.
