Chapter 12 - Eleanor’s ConditionThe news broke before noon.

DEAD WHITMORE PATRIARCH FOUND ALIVE. FIRST WIFE ALSO DISCOVERED. FAKE PREGNANCY SCANDAL ROCKS BILLIONAIRE FAMILY.
Reporters surrounded the hospital. Cameras filled the street. Former friends issued statements about being “shocked and saddened.” Board members resigned for “personal reasons.” Vanessa’s social media accounts disappeared within hours.
But inside Eleanor’s room, none of that mattered.
Her blood pressure was rising.
The baby was in distress.
Doctors spoke in calm voices that frightened everyone.
Alexander stood beside her bed now, allowed but not forgiven. Eleanor had let him stay after Richard’s arrest, but trust did not return simply because the villain had been found.
“They told me you signed the transfer,” she whispered.
“I signed a trust for a baby I thought was Vanessa’s,” he said, voice raw. “I didn’t know it was ours.”
“Ours,” she repeated.
The word hurt her.
Alexander lowered his head.
“I mourned you every day.”
Eleanor looked at him.
“Did you?”
He flinched.
“Or did you mourn until Vanessa made it easier?”
Silence filled the room.
It was cruel.
It was also fair.
“I was weak,” Alexander admitted. “I let people manage my grief. I let Vanessa stand close because she knew when to speak and when to touch my arm. I confused comfort with truth.”
Eleanor closed her eyes.
A tear slipped down her temple.
“I screamed your name in that room.”
Alexander took her hand gently.
“I know.”
“You didn’t come.”
“I know.”
Her fingers tightened once, not in forgiveness but pain.
The monitor beside her changed rhythm.
A nurse rushed in.
Then another.
The doctor looked at Alexander.
“We may need to deliver tonight.”
Eleanor’s eyes opened, wide with fear.
“No. It’s too early.”
“It may be safer than waiting.”
Alexander turned pale.
The baby had been conceived in a lab, stolen into existence, used as bait in a corporate trap. But none of that changed the sound of the tiny heartbeat fighting through the monitor.
Eleanor gripped Alexander’s hand.
“If something happens to me,” she whispered, “do not let them take my baby.”
His voice broke.
“No one will take our child.”
She stared at him.
“Promise like you should have promised three years ago.”
Alexander bent over her hand.
“I promise.”

Outside the door, Sophie began to cry.
Because even an eight-year-old could understand that sometimes truth arrived just in time to hurt more.
