Chapter 15 - The Judge’s PriceJudge Malcolm Reeve stood so fast his chair hit the wall behind him.

“This is outrageous.”
One of the federal agents walked to the bench.
“Your Honor, step down.”
Cynthia’s lawyer shouted. Harlan demanded order. Reporters outside the courtroom somehow heard the commotion and began pounding on the doors.
Dana Voss cried as she told the truth.
Judge Reeve had been receiving payments from a foundation account for six years. He had signed sealed orders allowing private psychiatric holds. He had approved transfers of “unidentified female patient E.W.” between facilities under emergency confidentiality statutes.
He had never met Eleanor.
He had never needed to.
Her life had been reduced to signatures.
Alexander stared at the judge with pure disgust.
“How much?” he asked.
Reeve said nothing.
“How much did my wife cost?”
The federal agent opened a file.
“Two point seven million over six years.”
Eleanor, watching from the hospital video screen, closed her eyes.
Cynthia’s composure finally shattered.
“This is inadmissible,” she snapped. “This hearing is about guardianship.”
“No,” Harlan said. “This hearing is over.”
The federal agents arrested Judge Reeve in his own courtroom.
Cynthia screamed for her lawyer.
Her lawyer moved away from her.
That was when everyone knew she was finished.
The emergency petition was dismissed. Eleanor’s parental rights were affirmed. Alexander’s trust amendment was frozen pending criminal investigation. Harlan filed immediate action to restore Eleanor’s legal identity.
But victory did not look happy.
On the video screen, Eleanor suddenly winced.
A nurse rushed into frame.
Then the monitor began to alarm.
Alexander turned.
“Eleanor?”
Her face twisted in pain.
The doctor appeared beside her.
“We need to deliver now.”
Alexander ran from the courtroom before anyone could stop him.
I gathered Sophie and followed Harlan into the hallway, where chaos erupted in every direction.
Cameras flashed. Agents shouted. Cynthia cursed. Vanessa’s confession leaked. Richard Whitmore’s name crawled across every phone screen in America.
But all Alexander cared about was reaching the hospital before his child entered the world.
He made it to Eleanor’s bedside seven minutes before they wheeled her into surgery.
She looked at him through tears.
“If I die—”
“No.”
“Listen to me.”
“No,” he said again, breaking. “You survived three years. You do not get to leave now.”
Eleanor’s lips trembled.
“Then give me a reason to stay.”
Alexander pressed his forehead to hers.
“Come back and hate me as long as you want. Just come back.”
May you like
For the first time, Eleanor almost smiled.
Then the doors closed between them.
