Chapter 18 - The Boardroom FuneralThe Whitmore boardroom had seen hostile takeovers before.

But never one where the hostile party arrived in a wheelchair escorted by federal marshals.

Richard Whitmore entered under court permission to attend the emergency governance hearing. He wore a dark suit, his silver cane across his lap, his expression carved from old arrogance.

Cynthia appeared by video from jail.

Vanessa appeared separately, wearing no makeup and the face of a woman who had realized beauty does not help under fluorescent lights.

Alexander sat at the head of the table.

Eleanor was not supposed to attend.

She came anyway.

Still weak, still recovering, she entered in a wheelchair pushed by a nurse, with Detective Ellis at her side.

Every board member stood.

Not from respect.

From fear.

Eleanor looked at the room of men and women who had profited from her silence.

“Sit down,” she said.

They sat.

Harlan presented the evidence.

The fake death. The illegal confinement. The embryo theft. The forged trust clause. The bribed judge. The hidden patriarch. The false pregnancy. The attempted medical attack. The video confession.

By the time he finished, three board members had called their lawyers.

Richard looked bored.

“You have drama,” he said. “Not governance.”

Eleanor turned to him.

“You mistook cruelty for competence.”

His eyes narrowed.

Alexander placed a folder on the table.

“This is a motion to remove Richard Whitmore from all advisory influence, freeze all founder-linked voting proxies connected to him, and refer every complicit board member for investigation.”

One director scoffed.

“You don’t have the votes.”

Alexander nodded.

“I don’t.”

The director smiled.

Then Eleanor lifted her hand.

“But I do.”

Harlan distributed documents restoring Eleanor’s legal identity and voting rights. Richard’s entire plan had depended on keeping her dead. Alive, she controlled enough legacy shares to swing the vote.

The director’s smile vanished.

Richard stared at Eleanor.

“You ungrateful girl.”

Eleanor’s voice stayed calm.

“You buried me before I could become dangerous.”

She signed the motion.

Alexander signed after her.

The vote passed.

Richard Whitmore lost control of the empire he had pretended to die for.

As marshals wheeled him out, he looked back at Alexander.

“You will ruin everything.”

Alexander glanced at Eleanor.

“No,” he said. “I’m going to bury what should have died with you.”

The boardroom doors closed.

And for the first time in decades, Whitmore Industries belonged to the living.
