Chapter 14 - The Courtroom AmbushEmergency family court convened at 8:00 a.m. on a Friday.

Eleanor was too medically fragile to attend, so she appeared by secured video from her hospital bed. Alexander sat beside Harlan Pierce at the respondent table, looking like a man ready to burn the courthouse down with his bare hands.
Cynthia entered wearing black.
Not prison orange.
Black.
Elegant. Modest. Innocent.
She moved like a grieving aunt, not a woman accused of kidnapping and corporate theft.
Her lawyer argued first.
“Mrs. Eleanor Whitmore has endured trauma, yes. But trauma affects judgment. Mr. Alexander Whitmore mistakenly believed his first wife dead and entered a second marriage. The legal status of the unborn child is complex. My client seeks only stability.”
Harlan stood.
“My client was kidnapped by the petitioner.”
Cynthia’s lawyer smiled sadly.
“Allegedly.”
Alexander’s chair scraped back.
Harlan grabbed his sleeve.
“Do not.”
The judge, Honorable Malcolm Reeve, looked over his glasses.
“Mr. Whitmore, control yourself.”
Sophie sat behind me in the gallery, holding my hand. She had insisted on coming after receiving permission to give a statement if needed.
The judge seemed irritated by her presence.
Then Cynthia’s lawyer played a clip.
Eleanor in the blue room, crying, shouting Alexander’s name, throwing a glass at the wall.
“Instability,” he said.
Alexander whispered, “She was imprisoned.”
The lawyer ignored him.
Then he produced medical notes signed by Dr. Mercer stating Eleanor had shown “paranoid attachment,” “delusional belief of captivity,” and “hostility toward caregivers.”
It was monstrous.
And effective.
The judge leaned back.
“I am concerned.”
Harlan stood again.
“Your Honor, those records were falsified.”
“Can you prove that today?”
Harlan paused.
Not yet.
Cynthia turned slightly and looked back at Sophie.
Her smile was tiny.
Triumphant.
That was her mistake.
Sophie stood up.
“Your Honor,” she said loudly, “Cynthia had the pillow.”
The courtroom gasped.
The judge frowned.
“Child, sit down.”
But Sophie did not.
“She put it in the bag. Then she lied. Then she had the picture of the real pregnant lady.”
Cynthia’s lawyer objected.
The judge raised his voice.
“This is not a schoolroom.”
Then the courtroom doors opened.
Detective Ellis walked in with two federal agents.
Behind them came a woman in a nurse’s uniform.
Dana Voss.
The fake nurse who had tried to poison Eleanor.
Her hands were cuffed.
Her voice shook as she spoke.
“I’ll testify. Cynthia hired me.”
The judge’s face hardened.
Cynthia went white.
But Dana was not finished.
May you like
“And Judge Reeve knew.”
The courtroom exploded.
