Chapter 4 - Eleanor’s VersionEleanor Whitmore did not look like a dead woman.

She looked like a woman who had fought death every day and refused to let it win.

At the hospital, she was placed under police protection in a private maternity suite. Doctors moved around her carefully. Nurses spoke gently. Alexander stayed outside the glass wall because Eleanor had asked him not to come in yet.

That request hurt him more than any accusation.

I saw it in his face.

He had found her alive, but not returned to him.

Not yet.

Detective Ellis interviewed Eleanor the next morning. I was not supposed to be there, but Sophie had become part of the case, and Eleanor had asked to meet “the little girl who saw the pillow.”

When we entered, Eleanor turned her head on the pillow.

She was thinner than her photographs. Her dark hair had been cut unevenly. Her skin was almost translucent. But her eyes were clear.

Sophie hid behind me.

Eleanor smiled softly.

“You were very brave.”

Sophie whispered, “I thought they would be mad.”

“They are mad,” Eleanor said. “That is how you know you found the truth.”

Then she told us what happened.

Three years earlier, Eleanor had discovered that Vanessa and Cynthia were not just social climbers. They were laundering money through charities tied to the Whitmore Foundation. When Eleanor confronted Alexander’s board, she was told to stay quiet until after a major merger.

She refused.

Two nights later, her car was found at the river.

Her body was never recovered.

Alexander had been told she died on impact and the current carried her away.

But Eleanor had not died.

She had been drugged, taken to a private clinic, and kept sedated while Vanessa stepped into her place beside Alexander as “the grieving family friend.”

“At first, they wanted me to sign documents,” Eleanor said. “Then they wanted me declared unstable. Then Cynthia realized my name still controlled a voting block in the company.”

Harlan Pierce leaned forward.

“What about the pregnancy?”

Eleanor’s hand moved to her stomach.

Her voice shook.

“This baby is Alexander’s.”

Alexander, standing outside the door, gripped the wall.

Eleanor looked away from him.

“They harvested embryos during fertility treatment before the accident. I thought they had been destroyed after my death was faked.”

Harlan’s face went white.

“Vanessa planned to claim the child.”

Eleanor nodded.

“They implanted one of my embryos into me six months ago. Not because they wanted a baby.”

Her eyes filled.

“Because they wanted an heir they could control.”

From the hallway, Alexander whispered one word.

“No.”

But the worst truth had not arrived yet.

Eleanor looked at Detective Ellis.

“They needed the baby born alive. After that, they didn’t need me anymore.”
