Chapter 11 - Grace Learns the TruthGrace read her father’s letter with trembling hands.

Caleb had warned her it might hurt.
He had not warned her it might break her open.
My darling Grace,
If you are reading this, then I failed to protect you while I was alive.
I have spent years pretending your mother’s ambition was simply pride. It was easier to believe that than to admit I married someone capable of destroying anyone who stood between her and power.
Grace stopped reading.
Her vision blurred.
Caleb sat quietly across from her hospital bed.
He did not rush her.
He did not fill the silence.
That was one of the things she had started to notice about him.
He did not treat silence like a weakness.
Grace forced herself to continue.
Bennett is not innocent. But he is weak in the way spoiled sons become weak when mothers worship them and fathers excuse them. Evelyn is different. She does not lose control. She gives permission, then watches others bleed.
A sob escaped Grace’s throat.
Her father had known.
And still, he had stayed.
Still, he had left Grace in that house.
Anger rose beneath the grief.
Caleb saw it.
“You don’t have to forgive him,” he said quietly.
Grace looked up.
The words startled her.
Everyone in her world worshiped dead men once they were gone.
Caleb did not.
Grace continued reading.
I changed the will because I believed giving you power would protect you. I now fear it may put you in danger. Trust Maria. Trust no one who tells you family loyalty requires silence.
At the bottom was one final line.
Your camera sees what people try to hide. Never stop looking.
Grace pressed the letter to her chest.
Her ribs screamed in pain.
She did not care.
“My father knew Maria could help,” she said.
Caleb nodded.
“She gave a statement.”
Grace closed her eyes.
Brave Maria.
Quiet Maria, who had loved them from the edges of rooms.
“What happens now?” Grace asked.
Caleb’s expression grew serious.
“Now your mother becomes dangerous.”
Grace almost smiled.
“She already was.”
“No,” Caleb said. “Before, she was protecting an empire. Now she’s protecting herself.”
His phone buzzed.
He looked at the screen.
His face hardened.
Grace’s stomach dropped.
“What?”
Caleb stood.
“There’s been a fire at the Whitmore estate.”
Grace went cold.
“The library?”
“Yes.”
She whispered, “Maria?”
May you like
Caleb did not answer fast enough.
Grace understood.
