Chapter 2 - The Camera That Would Not DieThe ambulance arrived in four minutes.

To Grace, it felt like four lifetimes.

Pain flashed through her body every time she tried to breathe. She could hear voices above her, scattered and distant, as though she were underwater.

“Possible spinal injury.”

“Keep her still.”

“She’s conscious.”

“Ma’am, can you hear me?”

Grace wanted to answer, but the world kept flickering in and out.

Then Caleb’s face appeared above hers again.

Not the charming photographer from the charity gala.

Not the quiet man who had complimented her lighting choices thirty minutes earlier.

A federal agent.

A stranger.

And yet his voice was the only thing keeping her from slipping under.

“Grace,” he said. “Blink once if you understand me.”

She blinked.

His jaw tightened.

“You’re safe now.”

Safe.

The word almost made her laugh.

Her own brother had thrown her off a balcony in front of their mother.

Her mother had watched.

And the family name, the great Whitmore name, was still hanging above them like a chandelier waiting to fall.

Paramedics lifted her carefully. Pain roared through her. She screamed before she could stop herself.

On the balcony, Bennett flinched.

Evelyn did not.

She only looked toward the guests.

Even now, with FBI agents surrounding her, she was calculating what they had seen, what they could be convinced to forget, what could be bought, threatened, buried.

“Everyone put your phones away,” Evelyn snapped. “This is a private family matter.”

Caleb’s head turned slowly.

“No,” he said. “It’s a federal crime scene.”

The words spread across the patio like fire.

Federal crime scene.

Guests began whispering.

Phones came back out.

Within minutes, the first video was online.

BILLIONAIRE HEIRESS FALLS FROM BALCONY AT FAMILY ESTATE — FBI ON SCENE.

But the real evidence was not in any guest’s phone.

It was inside Grace’s shattered camera.

Agent Nina Torres, posing as a floral photographer, picked up the broken camera body with gloved hands. The lens was destroyed. The casing had split open. But the internal drive light still pulsed.

“Caleb,” she called.

He looked over.

Nina held it up.

“It survived.”

From the balcony, Bennett whispered, “No.”

Evelyn turned toward him sharply.

One tiny word.

One crack in the family mask.

That was all Caleb needed.

“Separate them,” he ordered.

Agents moved fast.

Bennett backed away.

Evelyn finally snapped.

“Do not touch my son!”

May you like

But when an agent took Bennett by the arm, the heir to the Whitmore fortune did not look powerful.

He looked like a spoiled little boy caught with blood on his hands.
