Chapter 15 - Bennett BreaksBennett’s confession came in pieces.

At first, he blamed fear.

Then Grace.

Then their father.

Then the will.

Finally, when there was nothing left to hide behind, he blamed Evelyn.

“She said Grace would ruin everything,” Bennett told the prosecutors. “She said my father had become weak because of her.”

Assistant U.S. Attorney Lauren Keene watched him carefully.

“And what did you believe?”

Bennett rubbed his face.

“I believed whatever made me feel important.”

It was the first honest thing he had said.

The room went quiet.

Caleb stood against the wall, arms crossed.

Nina sat beside the prosecutor, reviewing notes.

Bennett looked at the recording device on the table.

“My mother always said Grace had softness where power should be.”

Lauren Keene asked, “Did your mother ever directly instruct you to harm Grace?”

Bennett closed his eyes.

“She never said push her.”

Lauren’s face revealed nothing.

“But?”

“She said if Grace had an accident before the emergency board vote, her shares could be challenged. She said old houses were full of old dangers.”

Caleb’s jaw tightened.

“Did you understand what she meant?”

Bennett opened his eyes.

“Yes.”

The confession was not clean.

Real confessions rarely were.

They were tangled in self-pity, fear, excuses, and fragments of truth.

But it was enough.

Later, Caleb brought Grace the summary.

He did not read the worst details aloud.

She asked anyway.

“Did he say he was sorry?”

Caleb hesitated.

Grace smiled sadly.

“That means no.”

“He said he didn’t mean for you to die.”

Grace stared at her hands.

“People keep saying that like it matters.”

Caleb was quiet.

Grace looked up.

“If I had died, they would have stood at my funeral.”

“Yes.”

“My mother would have cried.”

“For cameras.”

“And Bennett would have inherited everything.”

Caleb did not answer.

He did not need to.

Grace turned her face toward the window.

“I don’t want his apology.”

“What do you want?”

Her voice was low.

“I want him to tell the truth in court.”

Caleb nodded.

“That may happen.”

May you like

Grace looked back at him.

“No,” she said. “It has to happen.”
