Chapter 17 - The Trial BeginsThe trial of Bennett and Evelyn Whitmore became the most watched courtroom drama in America.

News trucks lined the courthouse steps.

Podcasts dissected every filing.

Commentators argued over inheritance, privilege, motherhood, greed, and whether evil looked different when it wore pearls.

Grace hated all of it.

But she showed up.

On the first day, Bennett avoided her eyes.

Evelyn did not.

Her mother sat at the defense table in a charcoal suit, posture perfect, expression wounded but dignified.

A performance until the end.

The prosecution opened with the balcony footage.

Grace stared straight ahead as the courtroom watched her fall.

A few jurors flinched.

One covered her mouth.

Evelyn lowered her eyes at exactly the right moment.

Grace almost admired the timing.

Almost.

Then Caleb testified.

He explained the undercover operation, the foundation investigation, the placement of agents at the gala, and the moment he saw Bennett’s hands on Grace.

Darius Vale tried to tear him apart.

“You were armed at a charity event.”

“Yes.”

“You deceived the Whitmore family.”

“Yes.”

“You posed as a photographer.”

“Yes.”

“And you had already decided they were criminals.”

Caleb looked at the jury.

“No. I was there to find out whether they were.”

Darius smiled.

“And did you want to be a hero that day, Agent Rowe?”

Caleb’s answer was calm.

“No. I wanted Grace Whitmore not to hit the ground.”

The courtroom went still.

Grace looked down.

Evelyn’s mouth tightened.

The next witness was Maria.

She walked slowly to the stand, hands still scarred from the fire.

Evelyn watched her with cold betrayal.

Maria took the oath.

Then she told the truth.

About the overheard conversations.

About the “old balconies” comment.

About Evelyn’s threats.

About the suitcases before the fire.

By the time she finished, the jury was no longer looking at Evelyn like a grieving mother.

They were looking at her like a spider in silk.
