Chapter 18 - Grace Takes the StandWhen Grace’s name was called, the courtroom changed.

The cameras outside could not enter, but the world seemed to press against the walls anyway.

Grace walked to the stand with a cane.

Slowly.

Painfully.

Refusing the wheelchair.

Not because needing help was shameful.

But because Bennett had last seen her broken on stone, and she wanted him to watch her rise.

She took the oath.

The prosecutor approached gently.

“Miss Whitmore, can you tell the jury what happened on the balcony?”

Grace breathed in.

Her ribs still ached.

“My brother asked me to stop looking into the foundation accounts.”

She described the argument.

Bennett’s anger.

Evelyn’s silence.

The way the party music floated up from below.

Then the hands.

The shove.

The fall.

She did not embellish.

She did not need to.

Truth was brutal enough.

“And what did your mother do?” the prosecutor asked.

Grace looked at Evelyn.

Evelyn stared back, unreadable.

“She watched.”

The word landed harder than a scream.

Darius rose for cross-examination.

He approached with soft sympathy.

“Miss Whitmore, you suffered serious trauma.”

“Yes.”

“Your memory may be affected.”

“No.”

“You were emotional that day.”

“I was alive that day. People often have emotions while being murdered.”

A few people gasped.

Darius stiffened.

Grace did not look away.

He tried the medical records.

She exposed the timestamps.

He tried family conflict.

She exposed the will.

He tried to suggest she wanted control.

Grace leaned toward the microphone.

“I wanted my brother to stop stealing from sick children. If that cost him control, he made that choice.”

Darius fell silent.

For the first time, Evelyn looked away.

That was when Grace knew.

Her mother had already lost the jury.
