Chapter 15 - The Deal That Broke the Empire

Nobody trusted Isabella Rossi.
Not Detective Ortiz.
Not Gabriel Ward.
Not Naomi Cross.
Certainly not Marcus.
Khloe trusted her least of all.
But smart people understood something dangerous people often forgot.
A liar with documents was still useful.
The meeting took place in a secured interview room at the county facility. Isabella sat in a gray sweatshirt, hair pulled back, face bare of makeup. Without the red dress, she looked younger. Not innocent. Just less armored.
Vincent Hale sat beside her.
Detective Ortiz placed a recorder on the table.
“You requested this meeting.”
Isabella nodded.
“I want a deal.”
Ortiz’s expression remained neutral.
“You are not in a strong position.”
Isabella smiled faintly.
“That depends on what I give you.”
Gabriel watched from the observation side with Naomi and a prosecutor named Aaron Bell.
Marcus had been told not to come.
He came anyway.
Khloe had insisted on attending remotely, against medical advice, propped in her hospital bed with Gabriel’s secure tablet angled carefully. Dr. Sloane had objected until Khloe said, “Stress is already here. At least let it be useful.”
On-screen, Isabella looked toward the camera.
“Is she watching?”
Ortiz said, “Speak to me.”
Isabella leaned back.
“My father and Graham Vale arranged the Bellweather plan. The goal was to trigger a board review, weaken Marcus, and force renegotiation of Rossi Capital’s position.”
“And Khloe?” Ortiz asked.
Isabella’s mouth tightened.
“She was the pressure point.”
Marcus’s fists clenched behind the glass.
Naomi glanced at him in warning.
Ortiz continued, “The medication?”
Isabella looked down.
“My father gave it to me.”
Vincent closed his eyes.
“Isabella,” he muttered.
She ignored him.
“He said I wouldn’t need to use it. He said fear would be enough. He said if Khloe had a scare, Marcus would become irrational and the board would move faster.”
Khloe’s image on the tablet remained still.
Her face gave away nothing.
Ortiz asked, “Did Carlo instruct you to assault Khloe?”
Isabella hesitated.
“No.”
The prosecutor shifted.
Isabella added, “He instructed me to make sure she stopped being an asset.”
The room went cold.
Gabriel looked at Naomi.
Naomi whispered, “That phrasing matters.”
Ortiz placed a folder on the table.
“We need proof.”
Isabella smiled without joy.
“My father stores insurance files in three places. One physical drive in his hotel safe. One encrypted cloud archive. One with me.”
Vincent turned to her.
“You told me you had copies. You didn’t say you had them with you.”
Isabella looked at him.
“I didn’t say a lot of things.”
She gave Ortiz a login path and a phrase.
The phrase was almost poetic.
Red daughters remember.
Within two hours, investigators had enough to obtain emergency warrants.
Within six hours, Carlo Rossi’s hotel suite was searched.
Within eight, Graham Vale’s offshore communications were seized.
By sunset, the first arrest warrant for a non-family participant was issued for a Bellweather executive who had coordinated the portal intrusion.
And at 7:18 p.m., Thorne Medical’s board called an emergency session.
This time, Marcus attended.
So did Khloe.
From a hospital bed.
Her face appeared on the boardroom screen, pale but steady.
Several directors looked uncomfortable. Graham Vale’s chair was empty.
Daniel Pierce cleared his throat.
“Marcus, Khloe, first, let me express the board’s concern—”
Khloe interrupted.
“No.”
The room froze.
Daniel blinked.
“Excuse me?”
“You don’t get to open with concern after moving to suspend my husband while I was under medical observation from an assault your chairman helped exploit.”
A director shifted in his seat.
Khloe continued.
“This board has twenty-four hours to authorize an independent investigation, suspend all Rossi-linked agreements, and provide law enforcement with complete access to communications. Anyone who refuses will be named in the foundation’s ethics filing.”
Daniel’s mouth opened.
No sound came out.
Marcus looked at his wife on-screen.
Pride moved through him, fierce and humbling.
She did not need him to rescue her.
She needed him to stand where he should have stood all along.
Marcus spoke next.
“I support Mrs. Thorne’s demands.”
Mrs. Thorne.
Not my wife.
Not Khloe.
The title mattered.
It reminded the board that she held power in her own right.
Director Ellen Marsh, one of the few who had remained silent during Graham’s attempted coup, leaned forward.
“I move to accept the demands immediately.”
A second director said, “Seconded.”
Daniel looked trapped.
The vote passed.
Unanimously.
Cowards could be useful when properly frightened.
After the call ended, Khloe closed her eyes.
Marcus reached for the tablet screen as if he could touch her through it.
“You were incredible.”
She opened one eye.
“I was angry.”
“Still incredible.”
A faint smile.
Then her face tightened.
Marcus sat up.
“Khloe?”
The fetal monitor alarmed in the hospital room.
Dr. Sloane’s voice came from off-screen.
“Khloe, breathe for me.”
Marcus was already moving.
Gabriel grabbed him.
“She’s upstairs. Running blindly won’t help.”
But Marcus heard Khloe gasp.
Then the screen shifted, the tablet knocked sideways.
Dr. Sloane called out, “We need NICU ready. Now.”
May you like
Marcus tore free and ran.
This time, no one stopped him.
