Chapter 2 - The Footage

The security room at St. Aurelia Medical Center was designed to disappear.

No gold trim. No marble floor. No flowers arranged by celebrity florists.

Just screens.

Dozens of them.

Every hallway, every private entrance, every elevator, every restricted corridor. The hospital served billionaires, governors, actors, and families who paid for privacy as if privacy could protect them from sin.

Tonight, it protected Khloe.

Gabriel Ward stood in front of the central monitor with Marcus beside him, both men silent as a technician loaded the footage from the private suite.

Elaine Parker sat near the wall, shaking. She had insisted on staying after giving her statement. Her mascara had smudged beneath her eyes, and she kept rubbing her palms together as if she could erase what she had seen.

Through the glass, Isabella sat in conference room C with a hospital attorney across from her. She had stopped crying.

That was what bothered Elaine most.

The tears had vanished the moment she realized no one was comforting her.

“Play it,” Gabriel said.

The footage began.

No sound at first.

Khloe entered the suite alone, one hand on her lower back, exhausted. She closed the door behind her and leaned against it for a moment, eyes shut.

Marcus swallowed.

He had seen his wife smile all evening for donors who barely remembered her name. He had watched her pose beside him under flashing cameras. He had told her, “Just one more hour.”

One more hour.

That sentence now sat in his chest like a stone.

On-screen, Khloe crossed the room and poured water into a glass. Then the door opened.

Isabella entered.

The technician clicked a key. Audio filled the room.

“Did Marcus send you?” Khloe asked on the recording.

Isabella smiled.

“No. He doesn’t send me anywhere, Khloe. I go where I belong.”

Marcus closed his eyes.

Gabriel watched him carefully, then returned his attention to the screen.

The footage continued.

Every word.

Every insult.

Every cold, careful threat.

“You were supposed to smile for the cameras, give him the child he wanted… and disappear.”

Elaine gasped softly.

Marcus did not move.

Then the first shove.

Khloe’s back hit the marble table. The sound was ugly and real. No elegant lie could soften it.

The second shove came harder.

The champagne glass shattered.

Marcus’s hands curled into fists at his sides.

Then Isabella stepped closer.

The camera angle caught everything.

Her heel rose.

Her foot struck Khloe’s side.

Elaine covered her mouth and began crying again.

Marcus stepped back from the monitor as if the image had physically hit him.

Gabriel stopped the footage.

For a moment, no one spoke.

The hum of the servers filled the room.

Then Gabriel said, “That is attempted aggravated assault against a pregnant woman. At minimum.”

Marcus’s voice came out low. “Give me a copy.”

“No.”

Marcus turned sharply.

Gabriel met his eyes.

“This is not a corporate file you can acquire and control. This is criminal evidence. Chain of custody starts now.”

“I’m her husband.”

“And I’m her uncle,” Gabriel said. “And tonight, that means I am going to protect her from everyone. Including powerful men who think money makes them useful.”

The words landed hard.

Marcus did not argue.

Because Gabriel was right.

His money had not protected Khloe. His name had not protected her. His security team, his influence, his reputation, his carefully controlled world—all of it had failed the woman he had sworn to love.

“What do you need from me?” Marcus asked.

Gabriel studied him.

“The truth.”

Marcus went still.

“The truth about what?”

“About why Isabella Rossi was close enough to your wife to do this. Why she had access to your private suite. Why she believed she could make an accusation and be believed.”

Marcus’s jaw tightened.

Elaine lowered her eyes.

Gabriel leaned closer.

“I have worked too many cases to ignore context. People don’t commit crimes like this in a vacuum. They do it because someone taught them there would be no consequences.”

Marcus looked through the glass at Isabella.

She was speaking now, hands moving gracefully as the attorney listened. Even in confinement, she looked like she expected the room to rearrange itself around her.

“My father worked with her father,” Marcus said. “The Rossis were investors in Thorne Medical’s European expansion. Isabella’s family has been connected to mine for years.”

“And Isabella?”

Marcus hesitated.

That hesitation told Gabriel enough.

“She wanted a place beside you,” Gabriel said.

Marcus’s voice went cold. “She wanted my wife’s place.”

Elaine finally spoke.

“She made people think she already had it.”

Both men turned to her.

Elaine wiped her eyes. “I’m sorry, Mr. Thorne. But she did. At events, she would stand too close. She would speak on your behalf. She told vendors she had approval authority.”

Marcus stared at her.

“Why didn’t anyone tell me?”

Elaine’s face hardened with a kind of exhausted bravery.

“Because everyone thought you knew.”

The room went silent.

Those five words did more damage than Isabella’s lies ever could.

Marcus had spent years building an empire where no one challenged him. Where every glance was measured. Every employee careful. Every outsider eager to please.

And in that silence, Isabella had built a throne beside him.

A false one.

But visible enough that Khloe had been forced to watch.

Gabriel’s phone buzzed. He answered, listened, then his face softened.

“Khloe is stable for now. The baby’s heartbeat is present, but there are concerns. They’re moving her to maternal observation.”

Marcus exhaled shakily.

“For now,” Gabriel repeated. “Do not mistake that for safe.”

Marcus nodded.

A knock sounded at the door.

A hospital security officer entered.

“Dr. Ward, police are downstairs. Also… there’s a problem.”

Gabriel’s eyes narrowed. “What problem?”

The officer looked at Marcus.

“Mrs. Thorne’s suite access log shows someone used an authorized Thorne family card to let Miss Rossi in.”

Marcus froze.

“My card?”

“No, sir.”

May you like

The officer swallowed.

“It was issued to your mother.”
