Chapter 17 - Blood and Paper

The allegation was insane.

That did not make it harmless.

Within the world Marcus Thorne had inherited, paperwork could become a weapon faster than any knife. Signatures, medical records, consent forms, storage agreements—anything with a name on it could be twisted into leverage by people rich enough to hire imagination.

Khloe sat in a wheelchair near Hope’s NICU room while Naomi explained the claim.

“Isabella says that four years ago, during the Rome negotiations, Carlo arranged a private fertility consultation under the pretense of genetic legacy planning for Thorne heirs.”

Marcus looked disgusted.

“I never consented to embryo creation.”

Naomi nodded.

“I believe you. The question is whether someone created documents suggesting otherwise.”

Khloe’s face was pale.

“Could they use this to challenge Hope?”

“No,” Naomi said firmly. “Hope is your biological child unless proven otherwise, and no claim Isabella makes changes your parental rights. But they may be trying to create public confusion.”

Marcus turned toward the NICU glass.

Hope slept inside her incubator, one tiny hand near her cheek.

His voice was low.

“They’re attacking a premature baby.”

Gabriel said, “They’re attacking paperwork around a premature baby. That distinction matters legally, but not morally.”

Khloe looked at Marcus.

“Did anything happen in Rome involving medical forms?”

He frowned.

“Routine executive insurance physical. Bloodwork. Nothing fertility-related.”

Naomi’s eyes sharpened.

“Bloodwork?”

Marcus looked at her.

“Yes. Carlo insisted all principal executives complete health clearances for key-person insurance tied to the European agreement.”

Naomi and Gabriel exchanged a look.

Khloe saw it.

“What?”

Naomi answered carefully.

“If they had blood samples, signatures, and a cooperative clinic, they could create a fraudulent record.”

Marcus stood.

“Find the clinic.”

“Already did,” Naomi said. “It closed eighteen months ago after regulatory violations.”

“Of course it did,” Khloe whispered.

By evening, the Rossi fertility allegation leaked.

Not through major networks at first. Through anonymous accounts. Then gossip sites. Then business blogs pretending to ask questions.

WHO IS HOPE THORNE?

DID ROSSI FAMILY HOLD SECRET CLAIM TO THORNE HEIR?

KHLOE THORNE’S BABY DRAWN INTO BILLIONAIRE FEUD.

Marcus saw the headline and nearly threw the tablet.

Khloe took it from him calmly.

“No.”

He paced.

“She’s a baby.”

“I know.”

“She’s fighting to breathe.”

“I know.”

“They don’t get to do this.”

Khloe’s voice sharpened.

“Then stop reacting like the headline is stronger than the truth.”

Marcus froze.

Khloe looked exhausted, wounded, and fierce.

“We do the test. We release what our lawyers say we can. We bury the forged records. But we do not give strangers the power to make us ashamed of our daughter.”

Marcus’s breathing slowed.

She was right.

Again.

The DNA test was done quietly and lawfully, not because Khloe doubted anything, but because the lie had to die in a way no boardroom whisper could resurrect.

While they waited, Gabriel followed the clinic trail.

The closed Rome clinic had been owned by a shell company connected to Bellweather’s European subsidiary. One doctor had disappeared into retirement. One nurse had moved to Florida. One administrator was found living under a new married name outside Naples.

The administrator talked first.

Fraud, she said. Not embryos. Records.

Carlo Rossi had wanted documents that could suggest future leverage over Marcus Thorne. Consent forms. Genetic storage agreements. Nothing actually completed.

“Insurance,” she told investigators. “Mr. Rossi liked insurance.”

By the time the DNA results arrived, the legal framework was already collapsing.

Hope Ward Thorne was the biological child of Marcus and Khloe Thorne.

No ambiguity.

No Rossi claim.

No secret arrangement.

Khloe read the report once, then folded it.

Marcus expected relief.

Instead, she looked sad.

“She is three days old,” Khloe said. “And we already had to prove she belongs to herself.”

Marcus knelt beside her wheelchair.

“She will never have to prove it again.”

Khloe looked at him.

“We don’t know that.”

He wanted to promise.

He stopped.

“We will spend the rest of our lives making sure she never stands alone when people try.”

That answer, she accepted.

The next morning, Naomi filed civil action against Rossi Capital, Bellweather Strategic, Graham Vale, and associated shell entities.

By noon, Thorne Medical publicly suspended all Rossi-linked agreements.

By three, the independent board review removed Graham from all authority.

By six, federal investigators announced they were reviewing potential cross-border financial crimes.

Carlo Rossi’s empire began to fall in layers.

But Isabella watched from detention with strange calm.

Vincent placed the latest headlines before her.

“Your father is done.”

Isabella looked at the page.

“No. My father is never done. He just becomes more honest when cornered.”

Vincent frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Isabella stared at the photograph of Marcus and Khloe outside the NICU.

Then she whispered, “He won’t come for me anymore.”

Vincent waited.

May you like

A tear slipped down her face.

“He’ll come for the baby.”
