Chapter 4 - Khloe’s Choice

Khloe did not look like herself under hospital lights.
Marcus had always thought of her as sunlight. Not delicate, not fragile, but warm in a way that made cold rooms less cold. Even when she was tired, even when society pages dissected her dresses and old-money wives whispered behind champagne glasses, she carried herself with a quiet steadiness that made him feel less alone.
Now she lay against white pillows, pale and still, wires connected to monitors, one hand resting protectively on the curve of her stomach.
The steady rhythm of the fetal heartbeat filled the room.
Marcus had never heard a more important sound.
He approached slowly.
“Hey,” he said.
Khloe opened her eyes.
For a second, she looked relieved.
Then she remembered.
Her face closed.
That small change destroyed him.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered.
She looked toward the window. Beyond it, the city glittered. Downstairs, the gala had finally been shut down after rumors spread through the donor crowd. Somewhere in the building, guests were probably pretending not to ask questions.
Khloe did not care about any of them.
“Did she say I attacked her?” she asked.
Marcus sat beside the bed.
“Yes.”
A sad smile touched Khloe’s mouth.
“Of course she did.”
“The cameras caught everything.”
Khloe closed her eyes.
A tear slipped into her hairline.
Marcus reached for her hand, then stopped before touching her.
He had touched her all evening like a husband for cameras. A hand on her back. A kiss near her temple. A practiced smile beside hers.
But now, in the quiet after violence, he was afraid he no longer had the right.
Khloe noticed.
After a moment, she moved her fingers slightly.
An invitation.
He took her hand like it was something sacred.
“I should have listened,” he said.
“Yes,” she whispered.
The answer was not cruel.
That made it worse.
Marcus bowed his head.
“I thought you were overwhelmed. I thought Isabella was embarrassing herself, not threatening you.”
“She told me people would believe her.”
His grip tightened carefully.
“She was wrong.”
Khloe looked at him then.
“Was she?”
Marcus had no answer.
Because in the private suite, for one dangerous second, the room had been silent. Isabella had cried. Khloe had been on the floor. And everyone had hesitated.
Not because they were evil.
Because Isabella had known exactly how to perform innocence.
Khloe looked away again.
“She has been building this for months. Every time she touched your arm in public. Every time she called your mother ‘Helena’ like they were family. Every time she corrected staff before I could speak. She wasn’t just insulting me, Marcus. She was training people to see me as temporary.”
He shut his eyes.
“I know.”
“No,” Khloe said softly. “You know now.”
The monitor beeped steadily.
Marcus opened his eyes.
“I’ll make it right.”
Khloe laughed quietly, but there was pain in it.
“That’s what powerful men always say after the damage is done.”
The words hit their target.
He deserved them.
“What do you want me to do?” he asked.
Khloe turned her head slowly.
“For once, don’t decide that for me.”
Marcus went completely still.
Khloe’s voice was weak, but clear.
“I don’t want a private settlement. I don’t want your lawyers putting this in a locked drawer. I don’t want your mother calling it unfortunate. I don’t want Isabella sent quietly to Europe with a trust fund and a new story.”
“She won’t be.”
“I want charges filed.”
Marcus nodded.
“I want the footage preserved outside Thorne control.”
“It already is. Gabriel secured it.”
“I want Elaine protected. Anyone who tells the truth will be threatened.”
“I’ll handle it.”
Khloe’s eyes sharpened.
“No. That’s what I mean. You don’t handle people like assets. You support them. You ask them what they need.”
Marcus absorbed that.
Slowly.
Painfully.
Then he nodded.
“You’re right.”
Khloe searched his face, as if trying to decide whether the man beside her was finally listening or simply learning a new form of control.
Before she could speak, the door opened.
Gabriel stepped in.
“Sorry to interrupt.”
Khloe’s hand tightened around Marcus’s.
Gabriel saw it and softened.
“The police are ready to take your statement, but only if you feel able.”
Marcus looked ready to refuse for her.
Khloe saw it.
“Don’t,” she said.
He stopped.
She looked at Gabriel.
“I’ll speak.”
Gabriel nodded.
“I’ll stay with you.”
Marcus stood. “So will I, if she wants me here.”
Khloe looked at him.
That one phrase mattered more than any promise.
If she wants me here.
For the first time since the attack, Marcus had not assumed.
After a long moment, Khloe said, “Stay.”
He sat back down.
Two detectives entered. One older woman with calm eyes. One younger man carrying a recorder.
Detective Lena Ortiz introduced herself, then asked if Khloe was comfortable beginning.
Khloe took a breath.
Her hand remained in Marcus’s.
“Yes.”
The recorder clicked on.
Khloe told the story.
Not as a victim begging to be believed.
As a woman placing truth on the table piece by piece.
The insults.
The threats.
The shove.
The kick.
The false accusation.
When she finished, Detective Ortiz looked at her with quiet respect.
“Mrs. Thorne, based on the footage and your statement, we’ll be seeking charges tonight.”
Khloe nodded.
Marcus exhaled.
Then the younger detective glanced at Gabriel.
“There’s another issue.”
Gabriel frowned.
“What issue?”
The detective opened a folder.
“Security found Miss Rossi’s clutch. Inside was a small unlabeled vial.”
Marcus’s blood turned cold.
Khloe’s fingers tightened around his.
Detective Ortiz continued.
“We don’t know what it is yet. But preliminary field testing suggests it may be a labor-inducing medication.”
The room went silent.
Then Khloe whispered, “She didn’t just want to hurt me.”
Marcus looked toward the door.

The man who had once built an empire out of controlled decisions felt something ancient and furious rise inside him.
“She wanted to take our child.”
