Chapter 6 - Before Sunrise

The world narrowed to a hallway.

Marcus had negotiated mergers in glass towers during market crashes. He had watched stock values swing hundreds of millions in minutes. He had sat across from men who threatened lawsuits, exposure, and ruin.

None of it mattered now.

Only the hallway.

Only the doors.

Only the sound of nurses moving fast.

Khloe had been taken into a high-risk delivery suite before anyone could soften the words. Emergency. Monitoring. Possible early delivery. Steroids. Neonatal team on standby.

Marcus stood outside the room because the doctors had needed space.

Because there were moments money could not enter.

Gabriel stood beside him.

“You need to breathe,” he said.

Marcus looked at him with empty eyes.

“I don’t know how.”

Gabriel softened, but only slightly.

“That’s honest, at least.”

Marcus leaned against the wall. His hands shook, so he shoved them into his pockets.

“She asked me to protect Elaine.”

Gabriel nodded.

“I already moved Elaine to a secure staff office. Hospital legal is taking her statement. Your mother’s security team has been removed from this floor.”

“My mother won’t like that.”

“Good.”

Marcus almost smiled.

Almost.

Then his phone began vibrating.

Once.

Twice.

Again.

He pulled it out.

Carlo Rossi.

He stared at the name.

Gabriel saw it.

“Do not answer.”

Marcus did not.

The phone stopped.

Then a message appeared.

You have no idea what my daughter can do when cornered.

Marcus showed Gabriel.

Gabriel took a photo of the screen with his own phone.

“Threat documentation.”

Another message arrived.

This family war will cost your wife more than the injury did.

Marcus’s face changed.

Gabriel grabbed his arm.

“Do not react. Document.”

Marcus stared at the words until they blurred.

Then he did something he should have done months earlier.

He forwarded every message to legal, police, and Gabriel.

No private call.

No off-record conversation.

No quiet deal.

A nurse opened the delivery suite door.

“Mr. Thorne?”

He stepped forward so quickly Gabriel had to catch his shoulder.

“She wants you.”

Marcus entered.

Khloe lay under brighter lights now. Her face was damp with sweat, her eyes tired but focused. Dr. Sloane stood nearby with two nurses. A neonatal specialist spoke quietly to someone by the equipment station.

The fetal monitor beeped faster than before.

Marcus went to Khloe’s side.

“I’m here.”

Khloe turned her head.

“You look terrible.”

He made a broken sound that might have been a laugh.

“So do you.”

Her lips curved faintly.

“Liar.”

He took her hand.

Dr. Sloane approached.

“Khloe, Marcus, we’re trying medication to slow the contractions, but if the baby shows distress, we’ll move quickly. You’re at thirty weeks. That is early, but we have an excellent neonatal team.”

Khloe listened calmly.

Marcus admired her so much it hurt.

“Will my baby live?” Khloe asked.

Dr. Sloane did not offer false comfort.

“That is what we are fighting for.”

Khloe nodded.

Then she looked at Marcus.

“If something happens—”

“No.”

“Marcus.”

“No,” he said again, but softer. “Do not talk like that.”

She squeezed his hand.

“You don’t get to command fear away.”

He bowed his head.

She continued, “If something happens, promise me our child won’t be raised by people who think love is weakness.”

Marcus looked up.

His eyes were wet.

“I promise.”

“Not your mother.”

“Never.”

“Not the board.”

“No.”

“Not the Thornes.”

He understood what she meant.

Not the name.

Not the empire.

Not the legacy that had swallowed every warm thing it touched.

He leaned closer.

“Our child will be raised by us. And if you decide someday that ‘us’ no longer includes me, I will still protect both of you without owning either of you.”

Khloe stared at him.

That was the first promise she believed.

Outside the suite, chaos brewed quietly.

Carlo Rossi had arrived downstairs with three lawyers and a private physician claiming Isabella had been “emotionally distressed.” Reporters had gathered at the hospital entrance after someone leaked that a billionaire’s pregnant wife had been injured during a gala.

Helena had retreated to a family lounge, where she made phone calls in a voice polished enough to hide panic.

But inside the delivery suite, there were no press statements.

Only heartbeat.

Only hands.

Only a woman fighting to keep her child safe inside her body for one more hour.

The medication began to work just before dawn.

The contractions slowed.

Not stopped.

But slowed.

Dr. Sloane finally exhaled.

“We’ve bought time.”

Marcus bowed his head against Khloe’s hand.

Khloe closed her eyes.

For the first time in hours, the room loosened.

Then Gabriel entered quietly.

“I’m sorry,” he said.

Marcus looked up.

“What now?”

Gabriel held a tablet.

“The press got a statement from someone close to the Rossi family.”

Khloe opened her eyes.

Gabriel’s face was grim.

“They’re claiming you staged the injury to frame Isabella and force the Rossis out of the company.”

Marcus’s expression turned deadly.

Khloe was silent for a long moment.

Then she whispered, “So that’s their plan.”

Marcus stood slowly.

“I’ll end it.”

Khloe looked at him.

“No.”

He turned back.

May you like

She took a breath, weak but certain.

“This time, we end it with the truth. Not power.”
