Chapter 1 - The Word He Refused to SayAlexander Whitmore did not move when his mother said, “Dismiss her.”

The room waited for him to obey.

That was what he had always done in that house. He had obeyed silence. He had obeyed duty. He had obeyed the cold, polished rules of the Whitmore family until they had wrapped around his throat like silk rope.

Grace Ellison stood beside the marble fireplace with two security guards behind her and a diamond bracelet in his mother’s raised hand.

His mother, Lady Eleanor Whitmore, looked perfect. She always did. Silver hair pinned at the back of her head. Pearls at her throat. Mouth curved with quiet disgust.

“She has been stealing from this family,” Eleanor said. “This was found in her coat pocket.”

Grace swallowed, but she did not beg.

That made Alexander look at her longer.

Most people begged when a Whitmore accused them. Grace only stood there with trembling hands and eyes that refused to fall.

“Where are my daughters?” Alexander asked.

Eleanor blinked. “Upstairs. Mrs. Hale is with them.”

“Bring them down.”

His mother’s smile thinned. “Alexander, this is not the time.”

“It is exactly the time.”

The room changed.

His uncle shifted near the piano. His cousin Victoria, who had spent the last month hinting she would make a better mother to his children than any hired help, lifted her champagne glass and went still.

Grace looked at him then.

Only once.

Not hopeful. Not relieved.

Afraid.

That fear bothered him more than the bracelet.

Eleanor lowered her voice. “Do not humiliate this family in front of the staff.”

Alexander stepped closer to the fireplace.

“When was the bracelet found?”

“This afternoon.”

“By whom?”

“Mrs. Hale.”

“Where?”

“In Grace’s coat.”

“And you searched her coat because?”

Eleanor’s jaw tightened.

Grace whispered, “I never touched it.”

A guard snapped, “Quiet.”

Alexander turned his head slowly. “Do not speak to her like that.”

No one breathed.

Then a small sound came from the hallway.

A wooden clack.

A soft wheel.

Another clack.

Clara entered first, dragging the stuffed rabbit from the footage. Behind her came Iris, gripping the side of her little blue walker.

Grace’s face broke before she could hide it.

Iris saw her and smiled.

Then, with everyone watching, the little girl let go of the walker.

Eleanor’s face went white.

Iris took one step.

May you like

Then another.

The diamond bracelet slipped from Eleanor’s fingers and hit the marble floor.
