Chapter 19 - What Mara DidGrace did not speak all the way back to Kensington.

Alexander did not push.

The girls slept in the car between them, Clara’s hand resting on Iris’s blanket.

When they arrived, Grace went straight to the nursery and closed the door.

An hour later, she came to Alexander’s study holding another letter.

“I found it in the lining of the box,” she said.

Her voice sounded far away.

Mara’s final letter told the truth Charles had twisted.

On the night Amelia died, Mara had entered the hospital room after hearing raised voices. Amelia was unconscious. Her alarm button had been pulled from the wall. Charles was gone. Eleanor stood there, calling for help too late.

Mara reconnected the alarm.

But before nurses arrived, Amelia woke for only seconds.

She pressed something into Mara’s hand.

A copy of the amended trust.

A document removing both Eleanor and Charles from influence over the twins’ inheritance.

Mara hid it.

Then she ran.

Because Charles saw her.

Because Eleanor saw her.

Because the next morning, Amelia was dead and Mara understood powerful people would rather bury a nurse than lose a fortune.

Grace lowered the letter.

“My mother did not save Amelia.”

Alexander stood slowly.

“She tried.”

Grace shook her head, crying now. “She ran.”

“She had a daughter.”

“She left your wife there.”

“She brought the alarm back.”

Grace covered her face.

Alexander crossed the room but stopped before touching her.

“Grace, your mother kept the truth alive.”

Grace looked up.

“She was afraid every day.”

“So are brave people.”

The silence between them changed.

Not romance.

Not yet.

Something deeper and more dangerous.

Trust.

Nathan burst into the room without knocking.

“We found the amended trust.”

Alexander turned.

“Where?”

Nathan’s face was pale with astonishment.

“In a safety deposit box under Mara Ellison’s name.”

Grace stared.

Nathan held up a copy.

“And Alexander, there is one more thing.”

He swallowed.

“Amelia named Grace’s mother as witness. If this document stands, Eleanor and Charles lose access to everything connected to the children.”

Outside the study, the nursery camera monitor flickered on by itself.

A live feed appeared.

Iris’s room.

Empty.
