Chapter 10 - Amelia’s Locked RoomThe twins’ mother had a room no one entered.

Amelia’s sitting room overlooked the garden. After her death, Eleanor ordered it locked “until Alexander was ready.”

He had never been ready.

That afternoon, Clara led him there.

Not Grace. Not Nathan. Clara.

She tugged Alexander’s sleeve after Victoria was taken for questioning and whispered, “Mama room.”

Alexander almost refused.

Then Iris, standing beside Grace with one hand gripping her skirt, echoed, “Mama.”

The key was in Eleanor’s private desk.

Nathan found it in a drawer beneath letters tied with blue ribbon.

The sitting room smelled of dust, lavender, and time.

Everything remained as Amelia had left it.

Books on the table.

A shawl over the chair.

A framed photograph of Alexander holding newborn Clara while Amelia held Iris in the hospital.

Grace stayed near the door.

Alexander walked to the desk.

There was a locked drawer.

Nathan opened it carefully.

Inside were medical reports, handwritten notes, and a sealed letter addressed to Alexander.

His hands shook when he recognized Amelia’s handwriting.

My love, if I am not here to say this myself, believe me now: Iris is stronger than they think.

Alexander sat down before his knees failed.

The letter continued.

Your mother keeps speaking as if weakness is shame. Promise me our daughter will never be raised to believe that. Promise me Clara will not become invisible because Iris needs more. Promise me you will not let this house turn love into control.

A sound left Alexander’s chest.

Grace turned away to give him privacy.

But he said, “Stay.”

So she did.

At the bottom of the letter, Amelia had written one final line.

If Eleanor ever says she is protecting our girls, look closer.

Alexander pressed the letter to his mouth.

For two years, his dead wife had been trying to warn him.

And he had never opened the door.
