Chapter 16 - The RecordingThey played the recording in Nathan’s office with police present.

Audio only.

At first, static.

Then Amelia’s voice.

Weak, furious.

“You will not use my daughters as pieces on a board.”

Charles Ashford replied, “You are emotional.”

Eleanor’s voice followed. “You are unwell, Amelia. Let us handle the trust.”

“The trust is for Clara and Iris. Not you. Not Charles. Not Whitmore Holdings.”

Paper rustled.

Then Charles said, “If you sign that amendment, you cut us out.”

“I protect my children.”

Eleanor’s voice turned cold.

“You protect one child too much and the other not enough. Iris will always require management. Clara will need structure. Alexander is drowning. You think love can run an empire?”

Amelia answered, “No. But greed can destroy one.”

There was a crash.

Mara’s voice entered, frightened. “Lady Amelia?”

Charles snapped, “Get out.”

The recording became muffled, as if hidden in a pocket.

Then came the sentence that made Alexander grip the table until his knuckles whitened.

Eleanor said, “If Amelia does not survive this, Alexander will never question us. He will be too broken.”

Grace covered her mouth.

The police officer paused the recording.

Nathan looked sick.

Alexander stared at the device.

For two years, he had believed his wife’s death was tragic.

Now tragedy had a shadow.

Not proof of murder.

Not yet.

But proof of motive.

Proof of conspiracy.

Proof that everyone around him had built a cage and called it care.

Grace whispered, “My mother kept this because she was afraid.”

Alexander looked at her.

“And they came after you because you found Iris.”

Grace’s eyes filled.

“No,” she said. “They came after me because Iris found herself.”

The officer restarted the recording.

The final sound was Amelia crying one word.

“Alexander.”

He broke then.

Not loudly.

May you like

Not dramatically.

Just a man folding over a table because his wife had called for him from the past, and he had not heard her until now.
