Chapter 17 - The Funeral LieCharles Ashford returned to London with lawyers.

He did not come quietly.

The next morning, every major paper received a leak: Alexander Whitmore had become romantically obsessed with his children’s nanny and was using false accusations to destroy his grieving mother and his late wife’s family.

By noon, photographers stood outside the Kensington gates.

By one, Grace’s name was online.

By two, strangers were calling her thief, seducer, liar.

Alexander found her in the nursery reading comments on an old phone.

Her face was blank.

That frightened him.

“Do not look at those.”

Grace laughed once. “People believe what rich families tell them.”

“Not after we release the footage.”

She looked at him sharply. “No.”

“Grace—”

“No. Your daughter’s first steps are not a weapon.”

That stopped him.

He had thought of evidence.

Grace thought of Iris.

She always did.

Nathan entered with grim news. Charles had filed an emergency petition questioning Alexander’s fitness as sole guardian. He claimed Alexander was unstable, manipulated by staff, and suppressing medical care.

Eleanor supported it from her solicitor’s office.

Victoria submitted a statement.

Mrs. Hale withdrew her confession.

The cage was closing again.

Alexander looked toward the twins.

Clara was coloring on the rug.

Iris stood beside the sofa, one hand resting on the cushion, watching everyone with solemn eyes.

Grace knelt beside her. “You are safe.”

Iris touched Grace’s cheek.

Alexander made a decision.

“We will not release Iris’s footage,” he said. “But we will release mine.”

Grace looked confused.

Alexander turned to Nathan.

“Prepare a statement. Full timeline. Bracelet footage. Lab report. Mara’s recording goes to police only for now.”

Nathan nodded.

“And Charles?”

Alexander’s voice went cold.

“Find out where he was the night Amelia died.”

That evening, a sealed hospital log arrived anonymously at Nathan’s office.

One entry was circled.
