Chapter 12 - The HearingThe first hearing took place three days later.

Eleanor arrived in cream silk, one hand resting on her stomach.

She looked pale, wounded, beautiful.

She looked exactly like the victim she wanted the judge to see.

Maya was not required to attend, and I would not have let her even if she were. She spent the morning with Mrs. Gable and a therapist Daniel recommended.

I sat beside Daniel while Eleanor’s attorney painted me as cold, controlling, and unstable with grief.

“Mr. Sterling returned unexpectedly,” Preston Vail said, “misinterpreted a disciplinary situation, and used his wealth to remove his pregnant wife from her home.”

The judge listened without expression.

Then Daniel stood.

He did not raise his voice.

He did not need to.

“We have school reports documenting physical collapse, weight loss, and emotional distress. We have staff testimony. We have security footage. We have evidence Mrs. Sterling restricted communication between the school and Mr. Sterling.”

Preston objected.

The judge overruled him.

Daniel played the hallway footage.

Eleanor’s face changed as the screen showed her taking Maya’s plate.

Then gripping her arm.

Then locking the blue room.

The courtroom went silent.

Preston leaned toward Eleanor and whispered sharply.

She stared straight ahead.

When the footage ended, Daniel placed Sarah’s trust documents into evidence.

“This was not merely cruelty,” he said. “It appears connected to financial motive. Mrs. Sterling attempted to access protected documents regarding Maya Sterling’s inheritance.”

The judge looked at Eleanor.

“Mrs. Sterling, did you lock this child in a storage room?”

Eleanor’s eyes filled with tears.

“She needed boundaries.”

The judge’s face hardened.

Temporary protective orders were granted.

Eleanor was barred from the estate and from contacting Maya.

An independent investigation was ordered.

And then Eleanor stood, trembling with rage beneath her perfect makeup.

She turned to me as deputies guided her away.

“You think Sarah saved you?” she whispered.

May you like

My blood went cold.

Because I had never told her about the letter.
