Chapter 15 - The Night Sarah DiedThe accusation hit the room like a gunshot.

Every camera turned toward me.

Eleanor knew exactly where to cut.

Sarah’s death was the one wound no amount of money, power, or time had healed.

I did not answer in the ballroom.

I walked out.

Not because I was guilty.

Because grief is not a performance.

But Eleanor’s words spread within minutes.

By midnight, headlines sharpened.

DID BILLIONAIRE’S FIRST WIFE DIE WITH SECRETS?

I sat in my study until sunrise.

Sarah had died in a hospital bed after eleven months of treatment. There was no mystery. No scandal. No hidden crime.

But there was guilt.

Mine.

I had been in London when she took the final turn.

A storm grounded my flight.

I reached the hospital forty minutes after she passed.

Maya had been six.

She had sat beside Sarah, holding her hand, while I was trapped above the Atlantic with no signal and no goodbye.

That was the truth Eleanor wanted to twist.

Not murder.

Absence.

The same absence she had used to hurt Maya.

At breakfast, Maya found me staring at Sarah’s photograph.

“Is the news about Mommy?”

I closed the laptop.

“Yes.”

“Are they saying bad things?”

“Some people are.”

She was quiet.

Then she said, “Mommy told me you were coming.”

I looked at her.

“What?”

“The night she died. She said Daddy is trying so hard to get home. She said don’t let sadness make me angry at you.”

My breath stopped.

Maya had never told me that.

“She said that?”

Maya nodded.

“She said love can be late and still be real.”

I covered my face.

Maya climbed into my lap like she used to when she was little.

And for the first time since Sarah died, I forgave the man who had not made it in time.

Then I opened my laptop.

Eleanor had used Sarah’s death as a weapon.

So I released Sarah’s truth.

A foundation video Sarah had recorded before she died.

Not for the press.

May you like

For Maya.

And in it, Sarah told our daughter exactly who loved her.
