Chapter 5 - The Locked BedroomAfter the guests left, Eleanor followed me upstairs.

Maya was in my arms, half-asleep, her face pressed against my shoulder. Exhaustion had finally swallowed her fear.

“Richard,” Eleanor said, “you are making a mistake.”

I ignored her and walked toward Maya’s room.

Or what had been Maya’s room.

When I opened the door, I stopped.

The pink curtains Sarah had sewn were gone.

The bookshelf was empty.

The framed photo of Sarah holding newborn Maya had been removed from the nightstand.

In its place sat a beige vase filled with decorative branches.

Maya’s room looked like a guest suite.

Cold. Clean. Lifeless.

“Where are her things?”

Eleanor folded her arms.

“I put them in storage. She was clinging to childish clutter.”

I turned slowly.

“She is nine.”

“She was becoming unhealthy attached to Sarah’s memory.”

The words landed like a slap.

I stepped past her and opened the closet.

Empty.

Then I heard a tiny voice against my shoulder.

“Daddy, I sleep in the blue room now.”

The blue room.

At the far end of the hallway.

A room we used to store old luggage.

I carried her there.

The door was locked from the outside.

My hand tightened around the knob.

“Why is this locked?”

Eleanor’s voice became sharp. “Because she wanders at night.”

I looked back at her.

Maya whispered, “I only went looking for Mommy’s blanket.”

For a moment, I could not move.

Then I kicked the door open.

The room smelled stale. No proper bed. Just a narrow cot. One thin blanket. A plastic bin with two school uniforms, worn socks, and a cracked hairbrush.

On the floor sat a framed photo of Sarah.

The glass was broken.

Maya reached for it, panicked.

“I’m sorry,” she cried. “I tried to hide it better.”

I knelt in that ugly little room with my daughter shaking in my arms, and the truth became complete.

This was not neglect.

This was erasure.

Eleanor had tried to remove Sarah.

Then she had tried to remove Maya.

And she had done it under my roof.

May you like

With my money.

With my name.
