Chapter 14 - The Charity Gala TrapTwo weeks later, Eleanor made her move.

The Children’s Light Foundation held its annual gala downtown. Eleanor had helped plan it before everything collapsed. Her name remained on invitations, though the board had quietly removed her from the program.

She came anyway.

Pregnant.

Elegant.

Surrounded by cameras.

I had not planned to attend. Maya had a therapy session that evening, and I wanted to be home when she returned.

Then Daniel showed me Eleanor’s statement to the press.

“I love my stepdaughter deeply. This is a tragic misunderstanding caused by grief, wealth, and a father who refuses to heal.”

The room inside me went silent again.

That cold business part.

The part that waited.

The board asked if I wanted them to deny her entry.

“No,” I said. “Let her speak.”

Daniel looked at me. “Richard.”

“She wants a stage. Give her one.”

Eleanor walked into the ballroom like a wounded saint. Cameras flashed. Reporters whispered. Donors turned.

She stepped to the microphone during the reception, uninvited but confident.

“I never wanted to defend myself publicly,” she began, one hand over her stomach. “But a child’s grief can be complicated, and a stepmother’s love is not always understood.”

People listened.

Some believed her already. They wanted the prettier story.

Then the screens behind her changed.

Not to security footage.

Not to bruises.

To invoices.

Fake vendors.

Payments.

The Swiss academy deposit.

Email excerpts where she described Maya as “an obstacle to estate stability.”

The ballroom erupted in whispers.

Eleanor turned toward the screen.

Her face emptied.

Daniel had not leaked anything. The foundation board had obtained the financial records through its own audit because Eleanor had used charity vendor accounts to hide personal transfers.

A board member stepped onto the stage.

“Mrs. Sterling, security will escort you out.”

Eleanor looked at me across the room.

For the first time, she did not look polished.

She looked dangerous.

And before security reached her, she smiled.

Then she said into the microphone, “Ask him what really happened the night Sarah died.”
