Chapter 19 - Maya Takes the TableThree months passed before Maya asked to eat in the dining room.

Not because she was forbidden.

Because she was afraid.

We ate most nights in the kitchen after that terrible Tuesday. Simple meals. Soup. Pasta. Pancakes when therapy days were hard.

I did not travel.

I moved my office home.

Sterling Holdings survived without me hovering over every room. That was another painful lesson.

One Friday evening, Maya stood in the doorway holding Sarah’s old recipe card.

“Can we make Mommy’s lemon chicken?”

My chest warmed.

“Yes.”

Rosa helped. I burned the first pan. Maya laughed so hard she had to sit down.

Real laughter.

Rusty, but real.

When the food was ready, she looked toward the formal dining room.

“Can we eat there?”

I kept my voice steady.

“Of course.”

We set the table ourselves.

No crystal.

No imported linen.

No truffles flown from anywhere.

Just plates, forks, lemonade, and Sarah’s lemon chicken slightly overcooked around the edges.

Maya chose the head of the table.

My chair.

I sat beside her.

Halfway through dinner, she put down her fork.

“Daddy?”

“Yes?”

“Was I really the leftover?”

The question hollowed me out.

I reached across the table and took her hand.

“No. You were the reason there was a table at all.”

Her eyes filled.

“Then why did Eleanor hate me?”

I wanted to give a clean answer.

Because she was greedy.

Because she was cruel.

Because some people see love as competition.

But children deserve truth they can carry.

“Because something was broken in her,” I said. “And instead of fixing it, she tried to break other people too.”

Maya thought about that.

Then she picked up her fork again.

“I don’t want to be broken.”

“You won’t be.”

She looked at Sarah’s photo on the sideboard.

“Mommy wasn’t.”

“No,” I said. “She wasn’t.”

Maya took another bite.

Then she smiled.

May you like

“It needs more lemon.”

And somehow, that small complaint felt like victory.
