Chapter 4 - The School Counselor ArrivesI called Mrs. Gable before anyone left the room.

Eleanor tried to stop me.
“Richard, you are humiliating me.”
I looked at her.
“No. You did that yourself.”
Mrs. Gable answered on the second ring. Her voice filled with relief when she realized I was already home.
“Mr. Sterling, thank God. I didn’t know who else to call.”
I put the phone on speaker.
Eleanor’s face changed.
Not fear yet.
Calculation.
Mrs. Gable spoke carefully, like someone who had documented every word.
“Maya collapsed today during recess. The nurse said her blood sugar was extremely low. When we asked about breakfast, Maya said she was not allowed to eat before school because she had dropped crumbs on the new runner in the upstairs hallway.”
A woman at the table gasped.
Mrs. Gable continued.
“This is not the first concern. Maya has lost noticeable weight. She has been falling asleep in class. She has stopped participating. Last week, she cried when another child offered her half a sandwich.”
Maya squeezed my hand so tightly her fingers dug into my skin.
I welcomed the pain.
It meant she was still reaching for me.
I asked, “Why wasn’t I told sooner?”
There was a pause.
“We tried. Your wife said all school communication had to go through her while you traveled. She said Maya was in grief therapy and that we were aggravating her trauma by questioning the family.”
I looked at Eleanor.
Her face had gone pale.
“You blocked the school from contacting me?”
“She was overreacting,” Eleanor snapped.
Mrs. Gable’s voice hardened. “Mrs. Sterling also withdrew Maya from the after-school art program without Maya’s consent. Maya told me art was the only place she felt like herself.”
My throat closed.
Sarah had painted.
Maya painted because Sarah had.
I ended the call only after asking Mrs. Gable to send every report, every email, every note.
Then I faced the room.
“Dinner is over.”
No one argued.
Chairs scraped. Napkins fell. Guests avoided Eleanor’s eyes as they gathered coats and purses.

One by one, the people she had invited to admire her walked out carrying the truth with them.
And Eleanor watched her perfect world begin to leak blood.
