Chapter 1 - The Man Who Should Have Been Dead“Don’t move.”

The voice froze the room harder than any scream could have.

Sarah lay on the marble floor, one arm stretched toward the woman holding her baby. Her cheek was wet with tears. Her body shook from panic, but the second she heard that voice, everything inside her stopped.

Victoria turned slowly, baby Noah pressed against her chest like stolen property.

At the doorway stood Victor Harrington.

Tall. Pale. Breathing hard.

Alive.

Sarah’s lips parted, but no sound came out at first. For eight months, she had believed her husband was dead. She had stood beside a polished black coffin. She had buried a man she never saw inside it. She had cried until her throat burned. She had given birth without him. She had whispered his name over their son’s crib every night.

And now he was standing there.

“Victor…” she whispered.

His eyes found hers for one second. Pain crossed his face, but he didn’t move toward her. Not yet.

His focus stayed on Victoria.

“Put my son down.”

Victoria’s face twisted.

“You should still be in that hospital.”

Sarah’s heart cracked open.

Hospital?

Victor stepped into the room. Behind him stood two police officers and an older woman in a gray suit Sarah did not recognize.

Victoria backed away.

“No,” she said. “No, you don’t get to come back and ruin everything.”

Victor’s jaw tightened.

“You ruined it the day you signed my name on those papers.”

Sarah struggled to sit up.

“What papers?”

Victoria looked at her with cold amusement.

“The papers that made me Noah’s legal guardian.”

Sarah’s blood turned cold.

“That’s a lie.”

Victoria smiled.

“Is it? You were grieving. Alone. Unstable. Everyone saw it.”

The older woman in gray stepped forward.

“My name is Evelyn Hart. I’m an estate attorney. Mrs. Victoria Harrington, we have reason to believe you forged medical records, custody documents, and a death certificate.”

Victoria’s grip tightened around Noah.

The baby began to cry.

Sarah crawled forward.

“Give him to me.”

Victoria looked from Sarah to Victor.

Then she laughed.

A small, broken, terrifying laugh.

“You think this is about a baby?” she said. “This is about the Harrington name. The Harrington fortune. And none of it was ever meant for her.”

Victor’s voice dropped.

“It was meant for my son.”

Victoria’s eyes flashed.

“Your son? You disappeared. You left the family weak.”

“I didn’t disappear,” Victor said. “You had me hidden.”

Sarah felt the room tilt.

Victoria turned toward the side hallway.

Victor lifted his hand.

“Don’t.”

May you like

Victoria ran anyway.

And Sarah screamed as the woman carrying her baby vanished into the mansion.
