Chapter 5 - The Clinic RoomVictor’s face changed.

Not anger.

Not shock.

Recognition.

The officers moved instantly. One took Daniel by the arm. Daniel jerked away, but the second officer pinned him against the wall.

“You have no idea who you’re touching,” Daniel snapped.

The officer cuffed him.

“I know exactly who I’m touching.”

Sarah covered Noah’s ears, though the baby couldn’t understand. She understood enough for both of them.

Victor’s voice was low.

“What did you do at the clinic?”

Daniel looked at him and smirked.

“You really don’t remember?”

Victoria screamed, “Stop talking!”

But Daniel was too proud to stop.

“You woke up before we were ready. You kept asking for Sarah. You pulled out your IV twice. You told the nurse you had to see your wife.”

Victor stared at him.

Daniel leaned closer.

“So I told them you were delusional.”

Sarah’s breath hitched.

Victor shut his eyes.

Flashes came back.

White ceiling.

A locked door.

A nurse who wouldn’t answer questions.

A phone just out of reach.

His own voice, hoarse, begging: Call my wife.

Daniel continued.

“You were weak. Broken. Easy to manage.”

Victor opened his eyes.

“And the accident?”

Daniel’s smile disappeared.

Victoria whispered, “Daniel.”

Evelyn stepped forward.

“Was the accident intentional?”

Daniel said nothing.

Martha spoke from the hall.

“The car had been serviced the day before.”

Everyone looked at her.

Martha swallowed.

“I heard Daniel tell the mechanic to make sure Mr. Victor wouldn’t drive far.”

Daniel’s face went white.

Victoria stared at Martha with pure hatred.

“You old fool.”

Martha straightened.

“No. I was a fool when I stayed quiet.”

Sarah looked at Victor, horrified.

“They tried to kill you?”

Daniel snapped, “No one tried to kill anyone. It was supposed to scare him. Delay him. Make him sign the control documents.”

Victor’s voice broke.

“You nearly made my wife bury me.”

“No,” Daniel said. “Mother did that.”

Victoria’s mouth opened, but no words came.

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“She ordered the closed coffin. She picked the fake ashes. She made sure Sarah got nothing but grief.”

Sarah felt something inside her turn to steel.

She stood with Noah in her arms.

“You took my husband. You tried to take my son. And you looked me in the eye like I was nothing.”

Victoria’s mask finally cracked.

“You were nothing before my family.”

May you like

Sarah stepped closer.

“No,” she said. “I became family the day Victor chose me. And you lost yours the day you chose money.”
