Chapter 16 - The Crack In The CrownVictoria stood so quickly her chair scraped against the floor.

“You all sit here judging me because a dead man left a sentimental video?”
Her attorney grabbed her sleeve.
“Victoria, please.”
She ripped away.
“No. I have been silent while thieves rewrite my life.”
Sarah watched the mask fall completely.
Victoria pointed at her.
“That woman walked into my family with no name, no breeding, no understanding of what we built.”
Victor rose.
“Sit down, Mother.”
Victoria turned on him.
“You were my greatest disappointment. You had everything. Education. Position. Power. And you wasted it loving someone who should have stayed outside our gates.”
A murmur moved through the courtroom.
The judge slammed the gavel.
“Order.”
Victoria ignored it.
“And you,” she snapped at Daniel. “You were useful until you became sloppy.”
Daniel’s smile vanished.
“Careful.”
“No, you be careful,” Victoria said. “You think I don’t know about the foundation accounts? You think I didn’t let you steal because it kept you loyal?”
Daniel went pale.
Evelyn looked like she had just been handed a gift.
Victoria realized too late.
Her attorney put his head in his hands.
The judge leaned forward.
“Mrs. Harrington, are you admitting knowledge of misappropriated funds?”
Victoria froze.
Sarah stared at her.
There it was.
The crown had cracked.
Evelyn stood calmly.
“Your Honor, we request that Victoria Harrington be removed from any temporary authority over Harrington family assets, that Sarah Harrington be recognized as a protected beneficiary under Charles Harrington’s final will, and that emergency orders be entered preventing contact with Sarah Harrington and her minor child.”
Victoria laughed bitterly.
“You think paper can keep me from my grandson?”
Sarah stood.
Every eye turned to her.
“He is not your possession,” she said. “He is not your redemption. He is not your access to power.”
Victoria glared.
Sarah’s voice stayed steady.
“He is a baby. My baby. Victor’s baby. And the first thing we will teach him is that love is not control.”
The judge looked at Sarah for a long moment.
Then she nodded.
“Emergency protective orders are granted.”
Victoria’s face went white.
The judge continued.
“Victoria Harrington is to have no contact with Sarah Harrington or the minor child pending further proceedings.”
For the first time, Victoria had no room, no house, no son, no judge, no lie to hide behind.

Only the truth.
And it did not protect her.
